#21675 — Third Party Email in Gmail

FromGmail User <gmail@invalid.invalid>
Date2026-08-06 00:32 +0100
SubjectThird Party Email in Gmail
Message-ID<1150heo$qph5$1@paganini.bofh.team>
*Send emails from third-party email address support ends: *The "Send as"
feature allows you to send emails from a different address you own, such
as work aliases or non-Gmail accounts. You will no longer be able to
send mail from third-party email accounts in Gmail on the web or in the
Gmail mobile apps. Gmail-to-Gmail aliases and Google Workspace “Send as”
functionality is not affected. Learn how to send emails from a different
email address or alias <https://support.google.com/mail/answer/22370>.

This will come as a shock to people who use custom domains with their
Gmail accounts.

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/17101213

However, it is still possible to use Gmail to store and send third-party
emails, but this requires Thunderbird or a similar programme, as well as
free SMTP servers and a 'Reply-To' address using Gmail. Once you have
downloaded your emails from Gmail, you can reply using your custom
domain email address. I have tested this method and it works, but we
will have to continue testing until the service closes completely.

Better yet, subscribe to a real ISP, one with a business model that
depends of subscriber fees and not on selling subscribers' personal data.

NO, not everyone has a smart phone. My wife and I have
"dumb cell phones" and a land-line. Neither of us can
handle QR codes, reply to text messages, or have any
kind of phone-based Internet connections. We have no APS
on any phone. We can send and receive photos only
through our desktop PCs.

It's hard to find any ISPs offering an email account with your own
custom domain.

I blame Donald Trump for monetising everything and destroying global
economies, resulting in businesses cutting services while keeping prices
the same or increasing them.

I used to pay around £3.25 per month for broadband, but now it's £23 and
the speed is slower. They essentially tell you to take it or leave it.
They are not going to reduce their charges. This service does not
include an email account.

My E-mail and Web site are hosted by Sunset.net, which is part of Great
Basin Internet Services (GBIS). They allow me to use my own domain.
Actually, GBIS might require users to have their own domains.

Yes, ISPs are changing to ICPs - connection-only. You have to move your
website to an independent hoster; I think most of such provide email
facilities (though I suppose _that_ may change in future?). I'm with
Krystal, and was previously with tsoHost.

I used to dream of the day when linux was as stable as windows. Never
did I imagine that parity would be achieved by windows declining into
the chaos that engulfs and stifles linux.

Or you can host it by yourself, why not?

You can get own old laptop, install Linux, Docker, and use Mailcow, which is very user friendly for non-techies.

There are only three actual problems you might encounter and all they connected to ICPs:

- Get public IP address(es).
- Get PTR record set for that address(es).
- (some ICPs/ISPs might enforce) Get 465/993 ports opened for SMTP/IMAP respectively. Some providers might block them.

I won't mention DNS-related actions for MX, TXT, SRV records, you can get list of required records and their values in Mailcow admin panel and it might be different from mine.

By "old laptop" of course I mean more-or-less decent one with 4+ cores CPU and 8+ GB RAM, like Thinkpad X220. My Mailcow instance running on 4cpu/8gb ram/100gb disk storage VM for years.

A bit beyond me I fear! Plus, I'd not want to leave something on all the
time (granted, I usually do this laptop, but probably wouldn't want to
if I was a way for more than a day or two).>

There are dozens of e-mail provders. Start here
https://smtpedia.com/email-providers-list/

One of the advantages of your own domain name is that You own it and
switching connections is very easy,

The days of Free, as in beer is gone. Suck it up and move on. To put it
bluntly.

Reason for the STMP server needing to be "controlled" is one of spam.

Care to suggest a couple? Especially in UK? (The email/web side can
probably be anywhere, but for a lot of UK, the ICP side in effect comes
via OpenReach's hardware, though other companies pretend they're
providing it.)

My policy now (as you hinted) it to use the ISP just for internet
connectivity, and get email/web hosting completely separately.

None of these are ISPs. We were talking about ISPs, not hosting
companies. The cost needs to be taken into account as well.

I am aware that hosting companies will give you a 1 GB mailbox — big deal!

Google used to give 15 GB for free, but now it's only 5 GB. This might
not even exist next year. DJP has taught these IT hegemony to charge for
everything, as life cannot exist without technology!

Correct, ISPs are cutting their offering to the bone, they no longer
offer "services" such as email, they are becoming purely "access"
providers, if you want a decent email provider, it's necessary to pay ...

Our dear Constantly Morphing Troll, this time from paganini, isn't going
to stop complaining. I have an email address from my ISP that i use for
service-related messages and nothing else. I figured out a llong time
ago that if I don't care to do do business with them any longer, I don't
want them to control my mailbox.

I have a Web host but register my various domains through unaffiliated
registrars. This makes everything competitive and I'm not tied to any
one entity.

Why the hell would I store archived messages in my Gmail inbox? There is
an on line host I archiive messages at. Not Google. Or I can archive
messages on a computer in my local network. Nothing is free but I'd
prefer not to rely upon Google for critical functions.

One can even pay for a Linux shell account like Panix and access Mail
and News that way.

Nothing in this entire thread discussed Thunderbird.

Looks like they do indeed provide hosting (which I guessed from the
name); I see no mention of them providing connection though.

Basically, Gmail user said it's hard to find an ISP offering email with
a domain; you said he hadn't looked; I said suggest some; Jim suggested
eukhost; I said they do hosting but not connection (i. e. aren't an ISP).

Your point may be valid (about not trying to get both from the same
supplier), but ...

Good news for mental healthy people.

It's their own fault. A huge mistake if you hand over the conversation
from or to your own domain to a fuckering mega-company like Google.
When you use Google as a MITM (man in the middle) for managing your
mail related stuff, you're an lazy idiot.

All it takes is meeting one idiot to recognise another, and I have
experienced this first-hand on these newsgroups!
