TB 38 for linux. I got tired of losing favorite extensions so I stopped
updating. Suddenly a few days ago I started getting an authorization
error notice every time I try to send or download email. When gmail
started demanding oauth2 credentials I complied, but it was NOT easy and
I don't remember what I had to do. This is my main account and I HAVE to
get it working again. I can log in to the website with firefox with no
problem at all. Any insight will be gratefully accepted.
This is the notice:

Which has also been explained by a poster in this thread. If your Thunderbird does not have oauth2 how can the exchange happen? Thunderbird is now up to version 138. If I was you I would update Thunderbird before trying ti fix the oAuth2 issuse. Google might be tightening the security side up and you have fallen foul.

I use fetchmail (no OAuth2, and never will be according to maintainers) to download from Gmail using the app password method. Works for me. I do also have Betterbird 128 for outlook.com which has no workaround for OAuth2. -- Chris Elvidge, England I WILL NOT HANG DONUTS ON MY PERSON

Shameful typo. I booted into a complete backup from a month ago with no problem at all -- Same TB downloaded today's mail. So something is clearly wrong with SOME part of my current profile. I am reluctant to copy the entire 20GB profile over, although that's what I do when I install a new version of firefox (I keep the old installation subdirectories and profiles untouched). I have mail going back to 1995 and am paranoid about losing anything. What files do I NEED to copy over in order to once again log in to whatever I could log in to last week? -- Cheers, Bev

Why, why, why do 'we' tie ourselves in knots to solve problems for users with ancient versions? So... they don't "look right, screw things up..." I always have the quick filter bar visible So I create customised views such as past day = age < 1 past 5 days = age < 5 unread or starred = match any (status != read) or (status = starred) personally I don't extend it to past year = age < 365 past month = age < 31 but I could. all those rules are three clicks away, if I was that bothered about number of clicks, I could create sub folders of a group with 'n' days of messages in them.

As you say :-) It gets worse, though. Slack 14.2.
I can't just update my current installation to 15 without losing
everything I've tweaked for 30 years, most of which is long forgotten.
WTF was it we did to make google earth actually work? Damn, I wish I'd
kept notes but it seemed so obvious at the time... And where did I get
that version of Picasa that I have to run with that windows emulator
thing whose name I've forgotten...
The rule: use the distro that your support hubby uses. Unfortunately,
he doesn't use his computer the way I use mine :-(

I put in a separate disk for 15/Current and did a full install. Then mounted 14.2/home on 15/home/14 and copied relevant stuff over (.mozilla for e.g.), or just replaced new directories with old ones. Lilo + dual boot meant I could always go back to or just see what changed from 14.2 - old /etc was still available. -- Chris Elvidge, England MY SUSPENSION WAS NOT "MUTUAL"

If so, is there still a problem? The error you showed looks to be a problem with the OAUTH2 token stored in Thunderbird for your Gmail account. All OAUTH2 tokens expire. When the client gets an OAUTH2 token, it also gets a renew token it is supposed to use with the OAUTH2 server to get new OAUTH2 and renew tokens. That should work in the background without the user knowing about the new token retrieves, but it can fail. Thunderbird stores the OAUTH2 tokens in its password manager. When you first setup an OAUTH2 account in Thunderbird, there will be a point in the handshaking that has the client use a web interface to the OAUTH2 server to validate you authorize that client to access that account. When the tokens are erased from Thunderbird's password store, it has to go through the handshaking again with the OAUTH2 server. Go into Thunderbird's password manager, delete the password for the Gmail account, and when Thunderbird next tries to connect you should see the save process as when you first added the OAUTH2 account to Thunderbird. If Thunderbird, after removing the password and having it perform another mail poll, doesn't initiate the OAUTH2 setup on its next mail poll or when you manually start one, you have to delete the account to recreate it, and then go through the initial OAUTH2 process. That's okay for IMAP accounts, because what you'll see in the new account will be the same as was in the old account, because all the messages are still in the same folders up on the IMAP server. With POP, you have to export your local message store for the account before deleting it to recreate it.

Trying to recreate it by flailing in the dark is terrifying. This account was NOT the first oauth2 thing, so it shouldn't be the first to expire, right? So I assume some sort of accidental corruption. Cosmic ray? I suspect that the safest thing is to copy the current profile to a new one, rename it, and then copy the month-old profile from the other partition (same name as current profile) to the /root/.thunderbird subdirectory. What's wrong with this? -- Cheers, Bev Real life doesn't always provide spoiler alerts and there's a limit to how much sensitivity one is allowed to inflict on others.

You could get one OAUTH2 token on day 1, and another for a different account 10 days later, but the later one expires first. > I suspect that the safest thing is to copy the current profile to a new > one, rename it, and then copy the month-old profile from the other > partition (same name as current profile) to the /root/.thunderbird > subdirectory. What's wrong with this? Nothing I can see, except if it is an expired OAUTH2 token then you'll soon get the same OAUTH2 error.

What's wrong with this? By the way, TBird 38 released June 2015 was the first to add OAUTH2. That doesn't mean they did it 100% correct when first introduced. Do you use anti-virus/anti-malware software, or anything that interrogates your e-mail traffic?

What he said :-) BTW, the other accounds died one by one.
