#18277 — FF157/linux profile selection

150 defaulted to the last profile you used, but since I start it with -P
I have to actually select it. Perfect for FF150. I let 157 make a new
profile, but 157 defaults to the 150 profile and I have to move to the
157 profile (I have maybe 10 to choose from) before clicking. There
seems to be no way to change this by either the settings or
about:config. I am a clumsy and forgetful person and do not want to
screw up my profiles. What am I missing?

There are four lines with the details for the various profiles - in
about:profiles - and you want the last of those four, with the buttons:
Rename Remove *Set as default profile* Launch profile in new browser
(your current default profile will only have the Rename button)
I'll let you work out which of those you want.

It showed FF150 as being located in the FF157 subdirectory. I set the
FF157 profile as default and launched it in a new browser -- which
showed ONLY my bookmarks tab, not the other 30 that I use regularly. I
backed out. It refused to allow FF157 to be the default. I am unwilling
to rename FF150 for fear that SOMETHING I value will be destroyed --
which has happened enough times that I now use my unweildy procedure
rather than just doing an update.

No, I don't trust programmers to do the right thing. Turning backspaces
in Thunderbird composition into CRLFs has GOT to be a super-stupid
error, but there it is.

May I suggest that you do a back up, or that you have a backup.

Why/how are you getting a beta version if you really do not want it.

Huh? 157 is the release version. I decided I should update to the
latest just in case there are any security updates that I need. What
gave you the idea that 157 is a beta?

If you don’t trust programmers, maybe you are the type who would
prefer a more hackerly tool than Thunderbird.

I use Claws Mail for my MUA, but I do a lot of email composition in
Emacs. Sometimes I want to preserve long lines (e.g. logfile entries,
program source). I found that, when I paste into Claws, it wraps the
lines; but then I hit CTRL/Z, and what it undoes is not the paste, but
the wrap.

In Pan I just turn off line-wrapping altogether. So it keeps the exact
line breaks I created in Emacs.

What did I say that implied that I could do better? I tried
programming. I hated it. I simpley can't think in the detail required
of even a high-level language like FORTRAN or BASIC. I did some shit
with dBaseII, but it was pretty crude and it hurt. Hubby and son are
world-class assembly-language (and more modern) system programmers, and
even they make mistakes.

I don't like being helpless, at the mercy of total strangers, but that's
the way it is. I've got all my mail in Thunderbird (and before that
Netscape) and that's a good reason to stick with it. Gmail is just
temporary.

I didn’t say you had to write the code; I just offered alternatives
already written by others.

Sorry! "Hack" means being a lot more programmerly than I can be!
