#17683 — desktop background remains dark

Subjectdesktop background remains dark
Message-ID<vqo8kv$1c940$1@dont-email.me>
For some reason, when I wake my 11 box from sleep, for the last couple
of days the screen background remains all black. It is set to shuffle
through about 4 different pictures, and has always worked just fine, and
did work properly when I'd wake the system. Programs I open look and
work as they should. Taskbar and icons all appear normal. Desktop
icons also show. Only thing missing is the proper background images.

First time I had it happen, I right clicked on the desktop and clicked
refresh and it came right up as it should. Last couple times, I just
wait and do what I intended to work on, and within about 30-60 seconds
it finally gets the screen right.

I don't know if this might have anything to do with it but I did get a
new monitor a few weeks back, but Windows 11 loaded whatever drivers it
needed and it does work just fine otherwise.
Anybody seen this or have a clue why it might be doing this?

My wife and a friend have had a few instances where their PC, laptops and both HPs, had no
screen image. It took me 2 boots to realize that the blinking HD light was indicating
something was going on. I took it to mean the laptop booted and was doing something.

It's not my PC and I don't use it so I'm not familiar with the lights, that's why I say this.

The issue is really very intermittent. In my wife's issue it happens maybe 1 in 5 reboots
or wakes.

I did some research and finally, weeks ago, I found there was a HP support assist program
on her laptop. The program had an option to check for updates. So as a try I did, and it
came up with some updates. I think there were 2 maybe, one was some innocuous item. The
2nd was a BIOS update. I hate doing these things. But, after 2 weeks now it's steady
and seems to be working fine. The was one of the prime suggestions on almost ever web
search I did. Seems like CoPilot might have been right. CoPilot and google and DDG all.

YMMV.

FWIW, I don't have your specific problem, but a similar one.

Mine is not with the Background (of the Desktop) and not with its
Slideshow setting, but with the Lock screen and its Windows spotlight
setting.

Sometimes, when I wake the system (laptop), the Lock screen is all
black (except for the time and date), instead of showing a Windows
spotlight picture. The next time, the problem is mostly gone, but
sometimes repeats for a couple of times.

So my 'problem' is similar to yours, just in a slightly different
environment.

AFAICT, it started some time ago. Last update cycle? Or the one
before?

I agree, it sounds like something similar and might have the same reason
for occurring. Mine began several weeks after the last update, and
before today's updates, so I would wonder why it worked for 3 weeks and
then decided to start doing this. I will keep checking for causes and
solutions, but it isn't the end of the world for me since it basically
gets it right in about 30 seconds. I'm just more interested in what is
going on.

Check the Reliability Monitor for crashes/failures ?

Check the EventVwr.msc (only if forced to) ?

Good ideas. Naturally today, woke it up and it all was working
perfectly. If it happens again, I'll check those two. Thanks

You can check the Reliability in the Settings wheel, any time after the fact.

The Reliability Monitor is a summary of Event Viewer, only it avoids
a lot of material that would not be of interest.

Thanks. I've used event view before, but I was unaware of reliability
monitor. I shall give it a look tomorrow.

Looked today and I like this reliability monitor. It gives some
interesting info on things you'd never know were struggling to get
working properly. Nothing on the small issue I mention, but I shall try
and remember this exists.

FYI, I got *my* problem - black Lock screen (only time and date) -
again just now, but nothing special in the Reliability Monitor for the
last few days (only on the 20th some HPSystemEventUtilityHost.OSD
('Stopped working') and McAfee Personal Security (I only have the web
plugin) ('Stopped responding and was closed') stuff. Nothing in the 5
days before that.

So still no clue as what is causing this (non-)'problem'.

I never figured out what was causing mine either, but it hasn't done it
for some time now. Forgot all about it to be honest. ;-)

For me it also didn't happen for quite some time. The last time was
quite some time before this thread, so I'm talking about weeks at least.

Anyway, it's hard to overlook a mostly black screen, so that was an
easy trigger! :-)

  Take care.
