Here you could get an unlimited landline connection for about £35 per month. Then - depending on your location - you could get 100Mbits/sec download, 20 Mbits/sec upload using a fibre connection. -- Graham J

I have 622.67 Mbps down, 617.86 Mbps up; latency 10 ms, fluctuation 1ms (Telefónica Spain, fibre to the home). Measured on <https://www.movistar.es/test-de-velocidad/> I can't give you a figure for the connection price, because mine includes the fixed phone, mobile phone, and TV. -- Cheers, Carlos.

Basically, I just started up my SeaMonkey Suite, let its Newsreader get the 'New post' numbers from each of my 40 or so NGs, started the IRC screen (two very quite channels) then opened my six tab Browser screen ..... and, almost immediately, I started getting messages from my Mobile Phone provider telling me I was running out of Credit. Depends on
(A) what $35 worth of "DATA" actually is (I would hope that it's below
$0.50 / GB), AND
(B) how much data you actually use in a given time period.

What you plan to do apparently is bying a 'data pack' of $35. That should indeed be much cheaper per MB, i.e. $35 will give you more MB/GB of mobile data than the first recharge. BUT, all providers and 'plans' are different, so YMMV/YMWV. BTW, who is your mobile provider (if different from your network) and what is your 'plan'?

Yes, when I get the landline ISP all up and running (next Thursday/Friday, I think), I might start 'playing' with my Mobile Phone account .... see what happens if I buy 'Mobile Data' and connect my Computer via the Mobile Phone. > BTW, who is your mobile provider (if different from your network) and > what is your 'plan'? > I purchase my 'plan' from Aldimobile .... you know, the Grocery Supermarket firm!! Her in Australia, they use the Telstra Mobile Network. Telstra is the major Australian Landline Phone Service (used to be Government owned!!) As for my 'plan', 'Pay As You Go'!! According to the aldimobile.com.au website, for the 'PAYG' plan, data costs 6c per MB [1], so $35 will give you only 583MB, which is very, very little in today's world. I don't see anywhere where you can add a 'data pack' to a 'PAYG' plan. (I could do that with our Telstra PAYG-like plan). I think you would have to switch to one of the 'Mobile Plans' which include data (and calls and SMS), but that would result in a monthly cost. It's probably best to raise this issue - 'low' cost data on a PAYG plan - in one of the Aussie groups, aus.comms.mobile or/and aus.computers. See you there! :-) [1] <https://www.aldimobile.com.au/collections/payg>

On my (now defunct'ish) Win 7 Laptop, each Wednesday I'd boot into Win7 (for which MicroSoft had ceased releasing routine updates), update my Anti-Virus (AVG Free) and do a complete scan ..... then boot back into Linux. As MicroSoft is still releasing updates for Win 11, if I ever get Win 11 running correctly, I'll probably adopt a similar practise. When do MicroSoft release their 'normal' updates?? First Tuesday of the month?? Second?? Third?? -- Daniel70

For you that would be the second Wednesday. I'm in The Netherlands and do my updates on the second Wednesday, which was yesterday (day before yesterday by the time you wake up! :-)). BTW, with regard to your data-limit problems: You can easily delay updates for upto 4 weeks: Disconnect from the network (so Windows Update can't check for updates). Settings -> Windows Update -> Pause updates -> Extend for X weeks. And connect again to the network. Windows Update has a '[Resume updates]' button to resume at any time, but be warned, when you click that button, it'll do a check for updates right away.

Better to define the connection as metered. Windows will then not do
automatic updates.

BTW, you can only set a connection as metered if that connection is currently visible to your computer. I.e. the mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot on the phone must be switched on and the computer must be connected to that hotspot, only then you can see/change the 'Metered connection' setting in the properties of that connection. That's different than on Android, where you have a 'Manage networks' facility to manage known, but unconnected, networks. You can get around this Windows limitation by turning off 'Mobile data' on the phone and then connecting to the mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot. I.e. you're connected to the hotspot, so you can change its 'Metered connection' setting on the Windows side, but since 'Mobile data' is off, you won't be wasting any mobile data for this change is setting. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt! :-)

Ah, nice trick. It did not occur to me that the phone would allow the connection. > > Been there, done that, got the T-shirt! :-) Yeah, I see :-) I've never tethered a computer using Windows, only with Linux (using openSUSE). It is easier to control what uses Internet, although distros try to emulate Windows. I have to manually disable the automatic updater (it looks for updates but does not install them; one variant downloads them as well) or uninstall it, then do manual updates when convenient. -- Cheers, Carlos.
