Quite easy ..... but expensive!! I went down to the local Council
Library (to make use of their Internet connection) and loaded $35 on to
my Mobile phone account .... and, tonight, connected via my Tethered
phone and, with-in about 30 minutes, had used up almost all of my $35
credit.

Tomorrow, I might try loading $35 Mobile Data and see what the
difference is.

In either case, I don't see this as a long term solution to my
situation. ;-(

Have you thought about moving to the UK? Here you could get an
unlimited landline connection for about £35 per month. Then - depending
on your location - you could get 100Mbits/sec download, 20 Mbits/sec
upload using a fibre connection.

I don't know how many gigabytes is that. What did you (Daniel) do,
download movies?

I have 622.67 Mbps down, 617.86 Mbps up; latency 10 ms, fluctuation
1ms (Telefónica Spain, fibre to the home). Measured on
<https://www.movistar.es/test-de-velocidad/>

I can't give you a figure for the connection price, because mine
includes the fixed phone, mobile phone, and TV.

Nope! Basically, I just started up my SeaMonkey Suite, let its
Newsreader get the 'New post' numbers from each of my 40 or so NGs,
started the IRC screen (two very quite channels) then opened my six tab
Browser screen ..... and, almost immediately, I started getting messages
from my Mobile Phone provider telling me I was running out of Credit.

I had to close the Browser and switch back to my Landline Telco .... at
the very much reduced download speed. ;-(

.... but what would the Airfares be in the mean time??

That's the sort of speeds I usually enjoy! ;-P

Yeah, my Landline phone costs me about $15 every couple of months for
the phone service, $35 a month for the Landline Internet service and, on
the Mobile phone, my $35 PAYG usually lasts me a couple of months or
more .... my usage isn't that great!! ;-P

What does $35 represent in terms of "additional data allowance"? 1GB,
2, 10?

And what were you doing in those 30 minutes? General internet browsing
(basic websites, email, TEXT Usenet, etc), or something more intensive
(youtube, system updates, etc.)

Unknown. I think (part of) my problem is/was I was paying for Phone
(voice) service .... where-as the Mobile Telco does offer to sell me
'DATA' separately to the (voice) 'phone' service.

I don't know how the Telco differentiates between Voice Zeros and Ones
and Data Zeros and Ones ..... but what would I know??

As I mentioned elsewhere, just getting my SeaMonkey

Well, that'd be something to look into. For all any of us know, you
topped up on voice minutes, and didn't add anything to "data allowance".

That IS correct, Dan, .... if I had wanted 'DATA', I had to make a
selection elsewhere.

When I get my Telco Internet service sorted (next Friday, I think), then
I might have a pay with my Mobile account and see what happens if I but
$35 of DATA. How long will that last with my computer Tethered to it.

Depends on

  (A) what $35 worth of "DATA" actually is (I would hope that it's below
      $0.50 / GB), AND
  (B) how much data you actually use in a given time period.

The first upping of your credit by $35 was probably a normal recharge
and you paid data via a PAYG (Pay As You Go) charge, which normally is
very high per MB.

What you plan to do apparently is bying a 'data pack' of $35. That
should indeed be much cheaper per MB, i.e. $35 will give you more MB/GB
of mobile data than the first recharge.

BUT, all providers and 'plans' are different, so YMMV/YMWV.

BTW, who is your mobile provider (if different from your network) and
what is your 'plan'?

Yes, when I get the landline ISP all up and running (next
Thursday/Friday, I think), I might start 'playing' with my Mobile Phone
account .... see what happens if I buy 'Mobile Data' and connect my
Computer via the Mobile Phone.

> BTW, who is your mobile provider (if different from your network) and

I purchase my 'plan' from Aldimobile .... you know, the Grocery
Supermarket firm!! Her in Australia, they use the Telstra Mobile
Network. Telstra is the major Australian Landline Phone Service (used to
be Government owned!!)

As for my 'plan', 'Pay As You Go'!! If I make zero phone calls and don't
use any data, my $35 lasts for twelve months.

According to the aldimobile.com.au website, for the 'PAYG' plan, data
costs 6c per MB [1], so $35 will give you only 583MB, which is very,
very little in today's world.

I don't see anywhere where you can add a 'data pack' to a 'PAYG' plan.
(I could do that with our Telstra PAYG-like plan).

I think you would have to switch to one of the 'Mobile Plans' which
include data (and calls and SMS), but that would result in a monthly
cost.

It's probably best to raise this issue - 'low' cost data on a PAYG
plan - in one of the Aussie groups, aus.comms.mobile or/and
aus.computers. See you there! :-)

Remember that you can tell Windows that the connection is metered. You
should do this, even if for now you do not expect windows to do updates.

On the 'do not expect windows to do updates' point, it is my intention

Additionally, I usually use Linux for my Day-to-Day usage. On my (now
defunct'ish) Win 7 Laptop, each Wednesday I'd boot into Win7 (for which
MicroSoft had ceased releasing routine updates), update my Anti-Virus
(AVG Free) and do a complete scan ..... then boot back into Linux.

As MicroSoft is still releasing updates for Win 11, if I ever get Win 11
running correctly, I'll probably adopt a similar practise.

When do MicroSoft release their 'normal' updates?? First Tuesday of the
month?? Second?? Third??

Second Tuesday US time. For you that would be the second Wednesday.
I'm in The Netherlands and do my updates on the second Wednesday, which
was yesterday (day before yesterday by the time you wake up! :-)).

BTW, with regard to your data-limit problems: You can easily delay
updates for upto 4 weeks:

Disconnect from the network (so Windows Update can't check for
updates). Settings -> Windows Update -> Pause updates -> Extend for
X weeks. And connect again to the network. Windows Update has a '[Resume
updates]' button to resume at any time, but be warned, when you click
that button, it'll do a check for updates right away.

Better to define the connection as metered. Windows will then not do
automatic updates.

Yes, I know. I was just describing where Daniel wants to use Windows
Update over his mobile phone connection, but just not now.

BTW, you can only set a connection as metered if that connection is
currently visible to your computer. I.e. the mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot on the
phone must be switched on and the computer must be connected to that
hotspot, only then you can see/change the 'Metered connection' setting
in the properties of that connection. That's different than on Android,
where you have a 'Manage networks' facility to manage known, but
unconnected, networks.

You can get around this Windows limitation by turning off 'Mobile
data' on the phone and then connecting to the mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot. I.e.
you're connected to the hotspot, so you can change its 'Metered
connection' setting on the Windows side, but since 'Mobile data' is off,
you won't be wasting any mobile data for this change is setting.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt! :-)

Ah, nice trick. It did not occur to me that the phone would allow the
connection.

>
> Been there, done that, got the T-shirt! :-)

Yeah, I see :-)

I've never tethered a computer using Windows, only with Linux (using
openSUSE). It is easier to control what uses Internet, although distros
try to emulate Windows. I have to manually disable the automatic updater
(it looks for updates but does not install them; one variant downloads
them as well) or uninstall it, then do manual updates when convenient.
