I can fondly remember spending AU$75 in about 1982/3 to buy a
used/Ex-Rental BETA format Tape of 2001:A Space Odyssey.

I think I STILL have the Tape ... although the Player has long since
gone. Now I also have a DVD of the Film, though!!

I went to the cinema in 2018 to see the 50th anniversary 70mm print. Still
fabulous.

Thanks for responding, Daniel! :-)

I've still got my Panasonic Video player. My intention had been to see
if I could somehow connect it to my Apple iMac!

Anyone reading here ever done that? (Please respond in ACW).

When you don't use things like your Panasonic Video player,
the transports jam up. The very first tape you put in it,
and punch play, should be a blank tape or a tape you can
afford to lose. It might not be working well enough, to
be spending money on conversion devices. The heat of keeping
them plugged in, that power supply that continues working
(even though the transport is not powered), that seems
to keep the materials dry in there.

To capture video, you might have used kit like this.
But it depends on what software is needed to work the
USB end of this, whether it will work on your particular
Apple machine.

   # Premium Composite RCA Scart RGB S-Video To USB Video Frame Grabber For PC

   https://www.ebay.com/itm/312451193099

My other machine, has a PCI Express TV tuner card, and it has both
analog and digital capture options. I have a VCR, but
the quality of the signal that comes from VCRs, does not
encourage spending time and effort getting that USB thing
working.

It's just easier to plug your Panasonic Video player,
into an old analog colour TV set you kept, and admire the
signal that way. If the picture seems a bit fuzzy, you
haven't spent any money on getting a digital fuzzy picture
on your Apple iMac. The idea is, to view the content one
time, without fussing too much over the process. As the
fussing cannot pay off (the Garbage-In-Garbage-Out problem
of video as a hobby).

Thank you for your comments, Paul. I think I'll refrain from trying to view
VHS tapes on my Apple iMac!

I hope I may soon have access to an old TV following the recent death of an
elderly widow who was my friend.
It will depend on the generosity of her executors! ;-)

I recently had a need to watch an actual tape, because I found a tape,
copied from a video-camera by a friend, which is the only one that
contains some shots of my parents.

So I think I first tried the video recorder with another tape. I had to
find a TV set with a SCART connector, and found that I had one that just
by chance I did not recycle.

The test tape played fine, so did the actual tape. Just some bad region
with sync difficulty.

I then located a service that convert tapes to digital file: perfect.
Their machine managed to extract video from the part that seemed corrupted.

Now I can ditch my tape collection and two machines.

You didn't keep a TV set of your own, from the analog TV era ?

I've got a 9" set I could use to view VCR output.
We're talking big screen luxury.

It's got a lot of dust on it, so first it'll need
a cleaning.

Biggest issue with old VCR, cassette tape decks, turn tables and so forth
is that the rubber parts, mainly the belts, turn to mush and require replacement.

True...

And by the time that happens, the builder is out of business and you

Does matetr. That sucessfully had created a lot of plastic junk that's
very hard to be recycled into harmless elements. :)

I'm thinking of my father record player. It used tubes. Made to last.
Wooden box. Alas, the rubber mat on the plate changed to goo while kept
in storage. Some rubber wheel inside near the motor developed a large dent.

Useless machine after that. But it worked for 40 or 50 years.

You possibly can keep it working if you know how to make parts,
including the use of 3D printers.

Rubber parts of the needed properties? Still need the factory drawings.

You can't 3d-print rubber? I dunno... no money for a 3d printer. :)

Dave is the only crew member left, because HAL
sabotaged the life support for the crew members in
suspended animation.

   http://miscel.wikidot.com/2001-transcript

In the last two sections, are some dialogs.

The first one, Dave is trying to get back into the
ship and HAL will not let him. Dave has to do a ship-to-ship
transfer, and under vacuum, he shoots from one ship (pod) to the
other at considerable velocity. Then he has to re-pressurize
the place he entered.

The last part of the transcript, is the scene where HAL is
being shut down by having some memory-modules unplugged.
As HAL loses his mind, he sings a song he was taught at the
factory. Then, the message the crew was supposed to get
when they arrived at Jupiter, starts to play (because HAL
is no longer there to stop it from playing).

The scenes where Dave is transported by the monolith, there's
no dialog, so there can't be a transcript. Eventually, Dave
returns to earth, as a super-being.

   https://exclaim.ca/film/article/did_stanley_kubrick_himself_finally_just_explain_the_ending_to_2001_a_space_odyssey

A later movie, plays with the idea. I didn't see that one,
not on TV either.

The Youtube selections, are just parts of the 2001 movie,
teasers of a sort, to sell DVD collections or whatever. I don't
think there are enough sections, to make the full movie.

   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey

"The film was announced in 1965 as a "Cinerama"[64] film and was photographed in Super Panavision 70
(which uses a 65 mm negative combined with spherical lenses to create an aspect ratio of 2.20:1). It
would eventually be released in a "roadshow" 70 mm version and a later general release 35 mm version.[65][66]
Colour processing and 35 mm release prints were done using Technicolor's dye transfer process. The 70 mm
prints were made by MGM Laboratories, Inc. on Metrocolor. The production was $4.5 million over the initial
$6 million budget and 16 months behind schedule.[67]"

It's probably best to see it in a facility that can offer 2.20:1 viewing.
The 35 mm version is likely to toss out some of the detail.
