My wife makes books for Amazon's online sales. These aren't printed books, they're PDFs made to Amazon's specifications. I think she currently uses Word97 and "Save to PDF", but I'm not really sure. But the process doesn't work well and drives her nuts. Does anybody have a clue what she _should_ be using? -- Tim Slattery timslattery <at> utexas <dot> edu

I don't remember the last time I gave them any money. Having said that, for a'print to pdf' requirement I don't know what if offers that Word doesn't. Why does your wife have problems?

I was going to say the free version of Libreoffice might do the same. At least if you
read the hype that it mimics Word.

I have used a paid version of the nearly 20-year old Adobe Acrobat Standard 8 for years which does everything I need, but only runs on Windows 7. If there is a way to get it to work on Windows 11, I haven't found it. Is there a free product anyone knows of which replicates the functions of this product?

You could always install something like VMware and make a virtual machine of Windows 7.
For file editing it would work.

In the meantime, I was > looking for a low-effort, free alternative product that would run under > Win 11 with similar functionality. Hi Rick, Somewhere I have the Adobe Acrobat (the payware) version 7, but I've been using version 6 payware on my Windows 10 computers for many (many) years. All you need are three things, all of which are saved in a zip file: a. A copy of the original installation files b. A copy of the original registered company name c. A copy of the original registered key The only reason I didn't like version 7 was they asked for the Internet and I hated that when it happened (now many progs won't work without the net). So I've been using version 6 ever since on my Windows 10 desktop, but the Adobe Acrobat 6 payware works "ok" on the Windows 11 laptop too. The main difference is that somehow I can't set the default PDF extension file association in Windows 11 to be the Adobe Acrobat 6 installation. Dunno why. But other than the Adobe Acrobat 6 payware not capable of being the default PDF file association in Windows 11, otherwise it works for me. Note that the payware, nowadays, doesn't do anything that you can't get with freeware, but that's a topic for another day... We need to update this chart... [?] Print book format PDF (FinePrint payware) [x] Add or concatonate pages (pdftk, acrobat payware) [x] Add signature (Adobe Reader Fill-and-sign sign-yourself tool) [x] Archive sites (wkhtmltopdf, Acrobat payware, fastone scroll capture) [x] Convert PDF to MSWord or any epub format & vice versa (Calibre) [x] Create PDF new text (Irfanview or Paint.NET plugins + Ghostscript) [x] Edit PDF existing text (Adobe Reader commenting, Acrobat payware) [x] Extract images (PDF Exchange Viewer, PDF Shaper) [x] Fast PDF reader: (Sumatra or Foxit) [x] Globally search & replace PDF text (Libre Office) [x] Merge PDFs (pdfsam, pdftk) [x] OCR, PDF-Xchange, freeOCR (paperfile.net), GOCR (jocr.sourceforge.net) [x] Online shrink PDF https://www.adobe.com/acrobat/online/compress-pdf.html [x] PDF text to audio file (Balabolka) [x] Print sans username in the properties (Libre Office Writer) [x] Remove pages (pdfsam, pdftk) [x] Remove restrictions (Ghostscript & Ghostview with ps2edit & pdfwrite or pdf2djvu) [x] Renumber pages (Acrobat Reader) [x] Reorder pages (mutool) [x] Rotate pages (Acrobat Reader) [x] Shrink PDFs (ImageMagick or Acrobat payware or rlvision shareware) [x] Tile PDFs (i.e., to print large posters) (Posterazor)

Hi Rick, Based on reading this newsgroup for years, all of that has been covered. [x] Merge PDFs (pdfsam, pdftk) [x] Shrink PDFs (ImageMagick or Acrobat payware or rlvision shareware) [x] Extract images (PDF Exchange Viewer, PDF Shaper) [you can crop later] [x] Edit PDF existing text (Adobe Reader commenting, Acrobat payware) [x] Create PDF new text (Irfanview or Paint.NET plugins + Ghostscript) I've written tutorials on how to REMOVE PDF restrictions, but I never thought about *adding* PDF restrictions, such as password protection. So I've added to the chart of things people want to do with a PDF: [x] Offline encrypt PDF to password protect the PDF for transmission <https://pdfencrypt.net/> <https://pdfencrypt.net/files/setup.exe> Name: setup.exe Size: 5515925 bytes (5386 KiB) SHA256: 7D5B37F986EBC374772CB749FAA4B4DA39D466D14A03BEE76B13800E59131992 What else is needed to do with a PDF that we haven't discussed in the past?

I use WordPerfect, to create PDF files, You can set the security parameters to control the documents use. WordPerfect Student and Home does the common word processing, spreadsheet functions that are in the more expensive versions and cost about $70, with exception. Non of the exception interfere with the normal things you do with a word processor There is another way to create PDF files. There are many free PDF printer programs. These programs are installed on you computer and are used like any other printer. The individual programs give you various levels of security control over the PDF file. They are non specific, and any thing you can print a hard copy of you can print to a PDF file. I have use CutePDF Writer for years. Some let you print multiple documents to one PDF file. There is a stand alone program that I use called PDFSam Basic. This program lets you manipulate multiple PDF's, remove pages, insert pages, combine multiple PDF, etc. It is not a printer, so has to be used as an auxiliary program to a PDF printer or a word processor that can create PDF files.

Open Comments, sellect the "T" function, position the cursor in the form and write the response. You may want to adjust the font to match that used in the form, When the form is complete save with your response. To make permanent to a PDF printer.

FWIW, I'm using quite a bit of XP/Vista era software on Windows 11 without (m)any problems. > Is there a free product anyone knows of which replicates the functions > of this product?

I use Libre Office Writer and export to PDF. I have no idea
what Amazon's demands might be. They may have a secret
deal with Adobe or some such to push a particular product.
LO works fine for me, but I only use it for business contracts,
receipts, etc. They're just office template files that I re-use.

I don't understand. One still has to have an editor to
set the layout, right? Word and Writer both do the
conversion. It sounds like Tim is saying that Word
doesn't do the layout the way that Amazon likes.
