Windows 11 24H2 Why does my System>Sound>Properties show that my LG E2742 monitor has audio capabilities, when clearly it does not? https://postimg.cc/3WqsbKCF Thanks.

It has according to the spec: <https://www.lg.com/nz/monitors/e2742v/> You need to connect via HDMI (or display port but you don't have it) to get the sound from the monitor. I have a similar version but from Amazon Basic Range and the sound is pretty good. I bought the monitor because it has three input/out ports - VGA, HDMI and Display Port. These days most monitors don't have VGA ports. Amazon Basic: <https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Basics-27-inch-Compatible-Speakers/dp/B0CP7Q9P14>

I looked more closely at the back of the monitor, and you are correct. There's a 3.5mm head phone jack.

And upon closer look at the model number on the back of the monitor, it is an LG E2742VA, and it does have a 3.5 mm (blue) jack on the back of the monitor. Not sure why I would ever use the jack, since my speakers are conected to the back of the desktop, and the desktop does have a head phone jack on the front of the tower. Thanks.

It tends to be unidirectional. The status or existence of any audio sink on the monitor end is unknown. The OS knows whether a bus termination has been plugged to an HDMI (or DP or VGA) connector. It can then route a video signal to the load, knowing that it's not creating RF emissions by the cable end being open. But audio carriage on the cable, there is no mechanism I'm aware of, which commonly can talk back and relay information about whether there are speakers or an audio sink. That's more or less best effort (works, if you have speakers, otherwise the bytes go into the bucket). Since there are hardly any questions about Dolby, I would guess that most people consume movie content, with 7.1 LPCM as the audio track, rather than Dolby flavors of coding. Paul
