As others have mentioned, Thunderbird is the most logical alternative/ replacement, both for newsgroups (NetNews) and e-mail. If you only use WLM for newsgroups, not for email, there are several other alternatives on which their users can comment. FYI, I use a CUI (Character/'Console' UI) newsreader (tin), but use Thunderbird for e-mail and occasionally for newsgroups.
