You can't really destroy it (apparently), as the ROM
inside the 578 is not volatile, and it allows attempts
to reflash the external SPI flash chip, as you wish.

Keep a backup copy of the existing SPI image (using the flasher
tool) and then that can be put back later if desired.

I get the impression that executing the "erase flash",
followed by a "power cycle" for the 578, puts it in
"ready-to-flash" mode.
