#181405 — Claws email

FromJim the Geordie <jim@jimXscott.co.uk>

SubjectClaws email
Message-ID<vmanet$37ctc$1@dont-email.me>
I'm trying to set up Claws email client.
It seems that Gmail no longer supports 'less-secure' apps.
Does this make it impossible to use Gmail accounts on Claws, or is there
another way?

You can indeed no longer use 'less-secure' apps, but you can use 'App
passwords' instead. That basically means that instead of your Google
account password, you use a special generated password, just for this
purpose.

I use (Google) 'App passwords' in Thunderbird to access my Gmail
accounts.

  See 'Learn more' on <https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords>

Still can't do it.
It all seems a bit of a phart.
There's no SSL, which Claws mentions in its documentation for v4.3.

All I'm trying to do is find an email client which will do what
Thunderbird does without it using a big chunk of memory (and is free and
will take 4 addresses of various kinds) and makes the tea and lays
golden eggs :)

You mean Claws does not support SSL?

An older version of Thunderbird? My 60.9.0 version uses about 130 MB
memory, which isn't small, but is about the same size as (Windows) File
Explorer.

BTW, as you're using Betterbird to post to Usenet, can't you just use
that for e-mail as well?

Well, I do. I just refer to it as Thunderbird for simplicity.
I'm getting readings of memory in the region of 260-380 MB on either of
them (Tb or Bb), which seems excessive, and I don't have masses of
emails in store.

Nope, it still supports them, via so called app passwords.

> Does this make it impossible to use Gmail accounts on
> Claws, or is there another way?

I think not. I myself access Gmail with Sylpheed, of which
Claws is a branch.

My complete Gmail settings for Sylpheed are:

  Basic:
    Server for receiving: imap.gmail.com
    SMTP server : smtp.gmail.com
    User ID : // my e-mail address
Password : // my Gmail app password
  Receive:
    IMAP4:
      Authentification method: PLAIN
  Send:
    Authentification:
      SMTP Authentifiation : // check
      Authentification method:
      User ID : // empty
      Password : // empty
  SSL:
IMAP4: Use SSL for IMAP4 connection
SMTP : Use SSL for SMTP connection

This works in Sylpheed 3.7.0. In some of the later versions
they tried to add some support for this new abominable
authentification method involving a browswer, which never
worked for me, so I had to stay with 3.7.0.

Have you considered ditching Gmail altogether? There are
many other e-mail providers, small and big, free and paid.
And there are great tools for migrating IMAP mailboxes.

Try Pegasus Mail: <https://www.pmail.com/index.htm>

It's probably possible to get around that by using Stunnel as an
intermediary between Claws and the mail server:

You might well be right, but I'm not sure I need Claws that much.

Apart from the fact that there is no mention of SSL anywhere in Ver 4.3,
I have managed to set up two addresses to run on TLS.
The problem still comes when trying to set up two Gmail addresses,
following what I did with the others and following instructions
suggested here using Gmails 'special' passwords and using my usual
passwords.

Look for TLS.

My Gmail-Address is working with Claws. It is called app password:

Sign in with app passwords
