Nope, it still supports them, via so called app passwords.

I think not. I myself access Gmail with Sylpheed, of which
Claws is a branch.

My complete Gmail settings for Sylpheed are:

  Basic:
    Server for receiving: imap.gmail.com
    SMTP server : smtp.gmail.com
    User ID : // my e-mail address
Password : // my Gmail app password
  Receive:
    IMAP4:
      Authentification method: PLAIN
  Send:
    Authentification:
      SMTP Authentifiation : // check
      Authentification method:
      User ID : // empty
      Password : // empty
  SSL:
IMAP4: Use SSL for IMAP4 connection
SMTP : Use SSL for SMTP connection

This works in Sylpheed 3.7.0. In some of the later versions
they tried to add some support for this new abominable
authentification method involving a browswer, which never
worked for me, so I had to stay with 3.7.0.

Have you considered ditching Gmail altogether? There are
many other e-mail providers, small and big, free and paid.
And there are great tools for migrating IMAP mailboxes.

Try Pegasus Mail: <https://www.pmail.com/index.htm>
