I use IrfanView to see my pictures. I can't use it for editing my
pictures. That's too compilcated. I need Photoshop for that.

As far as I am aware, you can do everything with "The Gimp" but it's a
royal pain just to do the simplest things with it; that's why I use
Paint.NET which makes the hard things to do very simple indeed.

Try it.

I'll wager it will replace PhotoShop for you, but it really matters exactly
what it is you're trying to accomplish.

Irfanview is a lot simpler and easier to use than photoshop. Everything
is available in a simple easy to read, dropdown menus from the main tool
bar.

Because Photoshop is soooooo much easier. (-;

Seriously, I use Irfanview as a viewer as well. I know what I have to
blur things, so I use that. Otherwise Draw (LibreOffice), Paint and
(sometimes) GIMP. It's also way cheaper than Photoshop.

Not free but can do a lot of PS's adjustments: Photoshop Elements
Free but not full featured: Faststone Image Viewer

You should ask in a photo newsgroup

Are you aware that Adobe has changed the terms for PSE? The licence is
now valid for three years, so you will need to purchase a new licence
every three years. This applies to products purchased in 2025 and
onwards. If you have older versions, they still have a perpetual licence.

Prolly' the best "photo newsgroup" on Usenet would be rec.photo.digital
although alt.comp.freeware is no slouch when it comes to free replacements.

To that end, I've already clued in both of those groups as to this query.

Ah! Good catch! Thanks! I hate screwing up. In public no less.
Let me look. Oh. Actually, it's there. And I've even used it recently.

It's just that I didn't have photo filter in that specific log file!

Although I actually forget what specialty edit I needed that I used it for.

This post of mine will only be useful to the small number of people who
don't use these editors all that often, where I use only some often.

As far as I've heard from photo specialists Affinity Photo is the best
alternative. It is quite different from PS so you will need to relearn
workflows, but it is very good by all accounts.

No subscriptions.

Affinity Photo for me!

https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/

There are also tools much like Illustrator, and Publisher, which work
together seamlessly. Discount on the suite, usually.

My wife switched to Affinity Photo after many years of using Photoshop.
Affinity is a one-time purchase, just like most software used to be.

Random Google search result, comparing GIMP and Affinity Photo to
Photoshop:

Was that ("didn't work well") shortly after you bought it, or after some
years? Either way, if the not-working was sufficiently bad, you should
have been entitled to support or a refund. In particular, assuming the
reinstall was on the same machine, there should have been a - probably
manual - procedure whereby you contact them and they help you out (with
another key, instructions on how to make the first one work, or similar).

This far down the line, you're probably screwed in that respect.

Depends what you want to do. For me, IrfanView (free) does all _I_ want,
but I _am_ aware what it doesn't do - see subsequent posts. (FastStone
is a less-known alternative that I think does almost exactly what
IrfanView does, from the time I tried it, with a slightly different user
interface for the functions; I prefer IrfanView, but that's almost
certainly because I'm more familiar with IV, than it being _better_.

This post of mine will only be useful to the small number of people who
don't use these editors all that often, where I use only some often.
 <https://i.postimg.cc/sDWhsB18/editor-pic.jpg> my photo editor archive

Irfanview:
 a. I mostly use it for fast viewing almost every image format
 b. It's also my batch processor for images;
 c. And, it's my "shrinker" "sizer" "cropper" for images;
But I would never call Irfanview an "editor" in terms of what that means.

Paint.NET
 a. I mostly use it for editing (i.e., greatly changing) images
 b. In my use model, that's mostly for screenshot editing
 c. As it is fantastic for adding text, arrows & circles/boxes
Where I think it's the closest free 1:1 replacement for Adobe Photoshop.

There are times when I use the plugins to both to add features.
 A. An example is an OCR plugin for Irfanview
 B. An example is a PDF plugin for Paint.NET

I'm probably more well organized on a computer than any other human being
you have ever met in your life, or will meet in the rest of your life.

So what I have on my system is what I found over the years to work for me.

If I look at what's installed at this very moment, each time I've needed a
specialty editor in the past year or so, I've re-installed a tested editor.

Here's a quick "dir /b" of my c:\app\editor\pic\ installation folder:
 analogexif
 fastone
 fotosketcher
 freehandpainter
 hip
 imagemagick
 inkscape
 iview
 krita
 paint.net
 photofiltre
 pinta
 pnet
 psp
 vicman
 xface

Each of those "specialty" editors does "something" that neither Irfanview
nor Paint.NET did that I had needed in the past year or so for images.

Hi Fokke Nauta,

I do have a license crack for CS6 that should work for your
situation since you did already have a valid license. Let me know if
you would be interested in this fix and we'll figure a way to get it
to you,

I haven't seen any new licence cracks for the latest Adobe products.
There used to be a guy called Sanders who distributed them, but he's
disappeared. I don't know what happened to him. None of the crack
newsgroups are involved with cracks these days.

Adobe has made it very difficult to crack its products by ensuring that
every DLL requires a valid key. There was a time when you only had to
reverse engineer one or two files, but that trick doesn't work anymore.
Attempting to do so breaks other things.

Sounds like fokke is out of luck. Can you recommend any other less
expensive software?

Thanks!
But I'm now working with Paintshop Pro and Gimp.
It's different from Photoshop, but I can use them.
