#251075 — Funny problem with my USB stick

SubjectFunny problem with my USB stick
Message-ID<n5lfcc$eh5$1@dont-email.me>
Hi. A very strange problem. I have a USB stick that I decided to
reformat using gparted. It's a 4 gig stick. I deleted all the
partitions on the stick, created a new ext4 partition. Everything
looked like it was working fine.

The stick mounts nicely. I want to use it to make a backup of my
.thunderbird hidden directory. I copy the directory, go to the stick,
try to paste it, but "Paste" is grayed out in the drop-down menu.

I thought maybe i needed to pen the file manager as root. I did.
Still, "Paste" is grayed out.

So, did I make a real goof by choosing ext4 as the file system for the
stick? Or is there something else going on?

Using MX15, 64-bit. Lovely distro, as mentioned previously!

Wrong permission/owner for the mount point?

Sigh. No idea how to check this out. I've looked on line and it looks
very complicated. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks.

Post the output of the following commands:

whoami
ls -lad /mnt_usb_mount_point
cd /mnt_usb_mount_point
ls -la

Um... Are you also using selinux? It may be related.

Sounds like root has ownership of the usb drive.
I'm not familiar with MX15 and do not know what file manager
MX15 uses. Thus I am asking if you can open your file
manager then right click on the usb
drive>properties>permissions, look at who owns the drive,
user or root.
If the permissions are for root and you want them to be user
then you will need to open your file manager as root then
right click on the usb drive click on properties>permissions
and you will be able to change the permissions to user.
Also in your file manager if you right click on the file you
want to copy is there a copy to choice? Easier then copy paste.
If you want to leave root as owner then you will have to
transfer files as root each time which will make root owner
of the file on the usb drive. Then if you want to copy it
back to your hard drive you will have to change it's
permission back to user to be able to use it.

Instead of trying to fix permissions on whatever the mountpoint is, a
quick(ish) and dirty solution would be to mount it manually. First
you'd have to turn off automagic mounting in XFCE -- I don't know how
that's done. Then

$ mkdir ~/usb-mount

$ mount /dev/[device] ~/usb-mount

If that doesn't work, then you've got to deal with permissions.

To find the usb device in /dev if you need to beforehand, let XFCE mount
it then use just

$ mount

to get a list of mounted filesystems.

If he can see the drive it is already mounted. He just can't
write to it as user so it is a permissions problem more than
likely.

Hmm. If I couldn't see drives that aren't mounted, I'd consider my

Well unless I misunderstood your comment you told him to
make a mount point then mount the usb. If that didn't work
it was a permission problem.
If he could see it to get a right click menu it was already
mounted.

As mentioned, gparted was able to handle the problem quite nicely. And, of
course, no need to mount the drive. It's working perfectly, thanks to Mark's
suggestion.

I did suggest making a mount point in $HOME, to get around the apparent
permissions problem. I did not say it was a permissions problem *if*
that workaround didn't work, but I did say if the workaround didn't
work, he'd probably have to deal with the actual permissions problem.

> If he could see it to get a right click menu it was already

He mentioned a drop-down menu, presumably in a file manager. But he'd
already said the drive was mounted, which was why I included turning
off automounting if he wanted to try the workaround.

I find comp.os.linux.misc to be a good resource.

I've had that problems in some distros (and certain DEs like XFCE), but
not in other (I have also had trouble executing binaries from a flash
stick, even as root, in which case I have to transfer the files to local
storage before execting them).

Since it's usually just to transfer a random file or two, I just use
sudo to get in there and write. No idea why it happens though.

If you figure it out post a followup. :)

If you want to use the usb stick between Windows and Linux
you need to use Fat32.
If just with Linux ext4 is better.
