Message-ID<5ed43956$1@LostBBS>
because it is of computer parts for building myself a new rig. I might
even put it inside this old case, so it will fool anyone wanting to ride
me about the spending of my money. Yeah I got relatives here that are
really that way.

I was thinking Ryzen 7 octal core, a gigabyte mobo "ultra durable" like
this 12 year old one. I do not need or want 'SLI' or 'Crossfire'. Just
a single PCIe x16 slot, some other little PCIe slots. And at *LEAST*
64gigs of system RAM! And will I need a different power supply? Or
will the 750W single 12v rail one do well?

So anyway, thought I'd bounce ideas around with you folks, see what we
snowball up! :) Thanks in advance, too guys!
McG.

The 750 should be fine, especially with SSDs. The 64GB of RAM is overkill.

For an octal core 16 thread CPU, all the 3D stuff and 2D imaging I do?
With 8 gigs I feel the walls closing in. Besides, seeing as the cost
of 64 gigs of DDR4 is just about what I'd paid for EIGHT gigs DDR2 all
those years ago, well why not? Ha! :D

Ok so I start off with just 32 gigs DDR4. Its still less than what I
had to pay for the 4 x 2gig DDR2-800. SO the RAM is better, faster,
and cheaper, but not cheap as air. Still costs a little bit. BUT, if I
get 2 16g DIMMS I can add 2 16g DIMMS later. :)

$274 for one RYZEN 7 3700X CPU with Wraith Chroma cooler. Oh just whip
me BEAT me take away my credit card...that is less than I had to pay for
this Intel Q9550 quad core *NO* hyperthreads CPU in 2008 that is running
just 2 feet to my right. Heh! HEH HEH! That sounds pretty good actually!

This ol motherboard was around $165.00 in 2008. I've been searching out
what Gigabyte makes and they recommend then actually locating something
that A)has a price on it and B)I can actually BUY one! That last one is
the dinger folks. Gigabyte and the other two dozen fair to big
manufacturers make a LOT of great modern and beautiful motherboards now.
I am beginning to see what I should have done is start at the local
and postal level and see what people are actually stocking and can get
out to me. Then, take this *VERY* short list back to Gigabyte, Asus or
whomever and carefully scroll down their much longer list(s)and see what
I want out of that.
Yaknow, every time I have done this, from 1985 to present, has been a
learning experience for me. That ain't bad! I have enjoyed it
tremendously through the ages. Got to say though, it's a tad on the
expensive side!
all that said, the 3 items I am about to push the "PAY FOR IT!" button
on tallies up to $738.76. That isn't even a 'bare bones' PC. This is
just "The Main Three". Motherboard, CPU and RAM. I have this old case
it will fit fine in, maybe another one in the storage room. And the
750W power supply. Five SATA SSD's and one SATA BluRay drive. Accounts
for all 6 SATA ports on the new mobo. I am a little confused by the USB
ports on it though. It appears to have 4 different types of USB ports!
Guess they are separated by purpose now. I'll figure it out.
I am sure I will want to put it all in a new case eventually. Then,
maybe build old George back up for a spare. Put him in the living room.

But, I really can't wait to see what kind of difference the RYZEN 7 is
over the Q9550 quadcore. :o)

That's pretty similar to this stuff I just ordered.
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X & Wraith Prism cooling
HyperX Fury 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (Kit of 2) Black
Gigabyte AMD AM4 X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI Motherboard (I demand SIX SATA
ports dammit! This is THE one that I found that could be sent to me.)

Neither of our CPU's has onboard graphics.

Both our CPU's have some serious ass kickery potential!

32 gigs of DDR4 is nothing to sneeze at, not when I have been using 8
gigs of DDR2 (PC800) RAM for 12 years!

I will simply add my existing case, power supply, handful of SSDs and
the BluRay burner, and the old Video card. BFG built it good man. Real
good! Its still kicking butt! I bet this will perk up my gaming too,
as well as all the 3D stuff :oD

The CPU arrives this Friday, then the RAM on Tuesday the 9th, then the
mobo Monday the 15th. In the meantime, I should start downloading all
the drivers and utilities I'll be needing. Well the motherboard should
come with disk(s). When it starts up, it will be the first time all
these SSD's and USB devices get to run at full speed!

But, we'll see, soon enough!

McG. :)

Sounds great. IMO, the bottleneck in your system will be the video card,
which is used by games and 3D apps.

Well of course! That BFG 8800GTX was a GREAT card, in its day.

Today, it's a great card for a 10 year old "former World Heavyweight
Champ"! Note to self, that means Retired! LOL! But, there was a
limit I put on myself for spending for just three items. I'd done it
the last time too, 12 years ago. And, I laid out 9 $100.00 bills for
the owner of the store I ordered my parts at. OK, I got the case too.
That was $75.00. In 2008 dollars I knew I'd done OK. so putting all
THAT thinking aside now, as it's DONE, the RYZEN 7 will be here Tuesday,
it's shipped already, man. I will be looking at the arrangement in the
machine, getting my tools ready, the space to work on it set up, and the
manual, yeah I can get that now too.
That's all good info, Spamster, thanks for bringing that up. Lots of
folks won't realize that right away. I knew it COULD be an issue. Then
too, the new system will handle the new generation of video cards way
better than this old motherboard. Everything changed, technology wise.
We have much better tech right now. We have moved on to 7 nanometer
scale, versus 12 nanometer for the Intel Q9550 I am running now. That
means way more transistors and stuff can be applied to the die now, and
it will run much cooler per Hertz, using less power to do even more.
Even so, the 8800GTX ought to be OK for a while. :)
EIGHT cores vs FOUR cores, plus, 16 threads more! And, its a 65 watt
device. This one I was proud to run is 95 watt. That was low for the
day. I was being 'green' it seems. ;o)

I know I know I know! But ya gotta let me get at least one payday
between The Birthday Build and that new thing first, ok?! Gee! I'm a
gotta get a copy Win10 Pro too! $199.99 !!!! On THIS Birthday Build
money!
I look at all that money, flowing so fast outta my bank card...and start
in with Simon and Garfunkles 59th Street Bridge Song...
Slow down ya move too fast! Got to make the mornin LAST! Just trippin
down the cobblestones, look at the sights and feeling GROOVY!

(I have wondered for 50 years now if THAT 59th Street Bridge was the one
in old downtown Houston, Texas...that was unceremoniously torn out to
make room for a new road connecting old and new Downtown. Hmmm? Time
was right, weed was right cause it was so WRONG back then, and those two
troubadors were indeed trippin the streets of ol Houston then too. HMMM!)

Ha ha ha! That's it man! Ohhhh me.

Got the vacuum today, cool, waiting for the 2GB SSD to come in Saturday.
Got the AMD RYZEN 7 3700X + Wraith Prism cooling fan WITH solid heat
sink and heat pipes.
Waiting on the 32gb DDR4 RAM and motherboard. The two small things ARE
on the way and look to be here on time. Love that part!
The motherboard. It appears that "UnbeatableSale" has sold an item to a
person but taken money from several people for that one item. Asswipes.
They do not HAVE ANY motherboard IN STOCK that will work with a RYZEN
7 CPU. That was a nasty piece of work. Walmart.com, when they use
external sellers IN STORE, they have to depend on that sellers word for
stocking. Seems this seller won't be used any more for this kind of
stunt. Back a statement I've made several times, and while Walmart.com
*ALMOST* got their very first ATTABOY! from ME, this AH SHIT! just wiped
that off the board in a hurry.

In the time I've used Walmart.com, they have yet to get even one SIMPLE
order completed right. Not even ONE.

Tomorrow I have to go to Amarillo for a doctor visit. After that I will
do something I've meant to for 8 or 9 years now, but yet to actually DO.
Which is to visit the "shopping district", a 25 mile long stretch of
Interstate 40 on the South side of town. Maybe find a Best Buy, as they
do stock a variety of computer parts. Like, um, motherboards, CPU's,
RAM, video cards. You know, the little necessities of Life! ;o)

And for some strange reason, Walmart has credited BACK to my bank the
cost of that whole order. All of it. I expect they will take the
money for the things I DID get but not that motherboard. Which can pay
up front for one in a store. :)

I just noticed the pic of the back panel of this mobo has a HDMI port.
Means onboard video. Gonna look it up. IT isn't likely to be something
super, but maybe better than the old warhorse, eh?

Got me. I think most mobos have that, so if you pop in a CPU with
integrated graphics you have video. If you have a separate GPU, then
that port is usually disabled.

I'll be discovering all that and more, soon. It's like Christmas in
June for me. OH WAIT! I'll be 66 in one month! It's my 66th birthday

That why sometime in the future I am thinking of getting another nvidia
rtx card. To my understanding Daz Studio/Iray doesn't do SLI, but...I
can dedicate it to specific cores. So..if one card bogged down from
"Displaying"...I can have another just for rendering.:)

I don't know much about SLI, as I've never really though it was
worthwhile, so I'm not sure about how it does or does not work.
