You brew it.
You sell it.
You drink it.

Worst, you EXPORT it!!

Seems to me that any and all blame is fairly apportioned!

Next, you might be telling us that we shouldn't blame Americans for
inventing White Castle sliders or Cheez-Wiz....

It is a rite of passage for furriners to eat at White Castle... so
I've been told. I suspect this is some kind of test.

I ate at a White Castle in 2001, and I have had other opportunities to
do so, but my intestines rose through my throat and threatened to
strangle me should I make a turn into their parking lot.

I do not know this "Cheez-Wiz" of which you speak. It sounds
White-Castle-ish, and therefore not to be trusted.

Cheez-Wiz is an invention of Kraft Foods (IIRC): one takes mediocre
cheddar (their stock in trade) and injects live steam into it,
reducing it to the consistency of a thick hand lotion (spreadable!!!)
for convenience of use (and for the profitability of selling the
additional water at cheese prices).

The only difference between Cheez-Wiz and tiling grout is the colour...

Makes you wonder about the American consumer if Kraft doesn't even trust
them to use a spreading knife for cheese...

It is not our incompetence with sharp tools they fear, but our bone
laziness they trust.

They now have peeled oranges and peeled avocados for sale at the local
supermarkets. Yes, you read that correctly. Someone peeled fruit out
of its lovely natural protection, and then wrapped it in plastic...
and sold it.

There is no limit to human stupidity, human greed, and human
ingenuity.

Affronts to human civilisation like this product do not deserve my due
diligence in giving it the correct spelling.

Not unless it involves placing it on the list of banned substances under
the Geneva Convention on Chemical Warfare....

Mozerella cheese or nothing. Cheeze Whiz is for weenies (and I don't
mean hot dogs, either.).

We are blessed with ample supplies of water (that's already been
through several people and the occasional hog before arriving at the
brewery), and amber waves of grain.

Caveat emptor.

Not me.

And you BUY it?

You ignore the consumer in your equation--no sale, no export; no
export, less brewing; less brewing, financial problems for
Anheuser-Busch with all that water, amber waves, and equipment to pay
for. The American Way says, if crap sells, sell crap!

Considering that our sole contribution to genres of world literature
is the wild west novel, is that really so surprising?

Considering that your contribution to world music has been massive and
varied, yes, it is surprising. You also gave us blues and jazz ... so
where are the literary genres associated with the music?

I suppose the musical comedy might be American, a sort of low-brow
operetta featuring "ordinary" folk, like the farmers and the cowhands
in _Oklahoma!_.

Goodness, no. Musical comedy is an age-old genre. It was a staple of
the 19th-century music hall in Britain, and before that the Italians had
the opera buffa. Theatre productions during Shakespeare's day would
have had musical numbers and comic interludes.

But not necessarily in the form in which the songs are stitched
together by a plot (tenuous) and sung by characters, as opposed to
stock figures (Pierrot & Pierrette, etc.). Music hall more closely
resembles what we would call vaudeville, separate acts with no organic
connection to one another, and Shakespeare's musical numbers mere
interludes with notes.

Which fortuitously also happens to be a decent measure for Rhine wine....

Why not simply light a match near him and watch the fumes from his hair
catch fire?

That is true.

So we would be left with opera buffa. I'd also suggest that operetta
would originally have filled the same market niche as musicals -- light
entertainment. Age has hallowed such works so now they are experienced
in the hush of an opera house or a semi-staged performance in a concert
hall, but in nature I would equate something like Lehar's "Merry Widow"
or Strauss's "Fledermaus" with "Guys and Dolls". Composers like Kurt
Weill straddled the divide between the two, his works being played to
both types of audience.

Stephen Sondheim does this also. Might I recommend _Into the Woods_
(original cast with Roberta Peters, please, not the recent film
abortion with Meryl Streep)? With _Sundays in the Park with George_,
he gets closer to opera, though. Something I have recently discovered
(thank you, YouTube) are your pantos. More like commedia del' arte,
but deliciously broad. I expect it is something of a rite of passage
for British kids to start seeing the point of the double entendres.
