So we would be left with opera buffa. I'd also suggest that operetta would originally have filled the same market niche as musicals -- light entertainment. Age has hallowed such works so now they are experienced in the hush of an opera house or a semi-staged performance in a concert hall, but in nature I would equate something like Lehar's "Merry Widow" or Strauss's "Fledermaus" with "Guys and Dolls". Composers like Kurt Weill straddled the divide between the two, his works being played to both types of audience.
