It was generated in 2009, so certainly prior to current Mix versions.  I
checked the age of the Broken Chain remailers and Red John's is the
oldest with May 2014.

Yes, the age of the key is almost certainly part of the problem.  None
of the older Type-I remailers are impacted.  I wonder though if there is
a problem at all with Inter-remailer traffic or if it's just an issue
with Echolot using recent versions of gnupg to inject Type-I messages.
Whichever, it will be interesting to get to the bottom of it!
