That doesn't make me less interested in exploring the question if
that's what is wanted.

Can I take it that you speak from experience here and that this has
occurred with you?

There are two or three possible meanings to self-reflection which need
to be identified: there is introspective examination of one's thoughts
and feelings after the fact; there is ongoing noticing of one's
in-the-moment responses; and there is the eko hensho that you
describe. I think only the latter merits the title of 'turning back
the light' because the other two are intentional acts, and what is
significant about the third is that it can't be done; you can't go to
it, it has to come to you. It differs in that respect from the
practice of mindfulness which, I take it, results -or can result- in
the "skinned alive" state you mentioned elsewhere.
