That's good, have you tried copying files on the XP machine to see if
it's any faster than on the Mac? You'll probably want to turn off
write caching in the settings for an accurate test.

It probably just writes a known pattern of bits from the start to the
end of the disk, then checkes they match later. I doubt it bothers
with a file system.

You could probably do something similar from the terminal in linux
with the dd command, though I'm not exactly sure how you'd identify
where any problems were specifically. No doubt posting in one of the
Linux groups would reveal a wealth of methods with varying lengths
of command line complexity. md5sum would at least tell you if the
data matched 100%.
