There is no "surface" in a flash drive - it's basically RAM chips, same
as an Solid State Drive (SSD). Any real problems would be normally be
picked up and / or fixed when formatting the drive.

Potentially, but unlikely, there could be a faulty / loose RAM chip. If
it was intermittent, then it could pass the formatting tests and cause
problems when copying large files.

It could be a faulty / worn USB socket or plug. Or, if you have other
USB devices plugged in, flash drive may not be getting enough power.

Of course, the USB flash drive may be fine, and it's the other drive
with issues.
