There's a fairly well written program for Windows that does that.
Can't remember the name and I had some trouble finding it, but
it's on my Windows machine, so I'll try to post from there later.

Often used for finding fake USB sticks, though the fake/dodgy stick
I installed it for was so broken that it hung the program until it
was unpluged, same with trying to access files. Linux was a bit less
touchy about it.
