That's what I'd like to do - if I can do that here, I can do it on other
systems elsewhere. It would appear from reading round that a direct WiFi
connection from the Linux laptop to the printer is not possible.

Quite.

Mine is old and has never been easy to configure for WiFi - hence my
desktop intermediary method.

I've now found that I can do it as I described in another post. This is
what my partner's Windows 11 laptop does normally (my desktop is never
turned off), but without any complicated setting up such as I described
- it just happens automatically on our Windows 11 setup. However, I'm
going to dig out my manuals and see if I can add the printer to the
router USB - just because it's "nicer". It would be nicer still to
connect the router and printer by WiFi, but I've never succeeded in
doing that despite many attempts (time for a new printer?), hence my
current clumsy method.

Regards,

Bob
