This is what my partner's Windows 11 laptop does normally (my desktop is never turned off), but without any complicated setting up such as I described - it just happens automatically on our Windows 11 setup. However, I'm going to dig out my manuals and see if I can add the printer to the router USB - just because it's "nicer". It would be nicer still to connect the router and printer by WiFi, but I've never succeeded in doing that despite many attempts (time for a new printer?), hence my current clumsy method.
