The malloc was a red herring. I've done loads of such expressions, and 
rarely were results passed directly to malloc with its size_t parameter. 
More pertinent might have been the type of 'some_value', which wasn't 
stated.

So I think consideration of how such an expression would be written, 
should be independent of whether the result is then converted to size_t.
