Note that when you use foreign functions in your language, you have to declare them in that language, using the types of that language, but can also take the opportunity to define a slightly different interface to those functions, provided it's compatible with the actual function. So if I say function F takes values 1 to 2**31-1, which better suits the preferred signed types, then those will be compatible with a function that takes values 0 to 2**32-1. Perhaps I shouldn't mention that with file functions using C's FILE* type, I sometimes use a 32-bit or 64-bit signed int type (and some parameters have been made optional) in case some people's heads will explode... You are creating a thin wrapper around a library, which is in a different language so that the normal rules of C need not apply. In fact the library (eg. msvcrt.dll) may not even be written in C, even if the public interface uses C syntax. It's just the use of C in the API that causes problems because it could use types that are not explicitly defined, unlike an ABI, and you have to trawl around for that information. > Perhaps your >> deliberate mistake doesn't have any serious consequences, but I'm >> at a loss to understand your reasoning.
