In another group, an opensuse Tumbleweed KDE fan caused me to look that 
distro over and while I had a stick w/ that, I booted it up on the old 
2G desktop.  It also did fine, like Neon, and used 450 megs live to the 
desktop.

So given the 'modest' ram usage of Neon's Ubuntu KDE and Tumbleweed 
opensuse KDE, I would say that the 'problem child' is Debian's 
implementation of KDE in its provided .iso.  I was using the non-free 
which isn't 'official'.  It is conceivable that the official Debian KDE 
might be better.
