I guess you can write dome devd rules to handle that, it's quite long 
ago I run BSD, back in the days when a computer was good hardware.

There was other tools befoe udev/eudev like mdev (you can not run the 
latest version of evdev with it), you had also HAL but both Linux and 
FreeBSD migrated away from HAL around 2008, think FreeBSD may have been 
faster as in Linux you had a time with udev+HAL as companion tools, 
before udev could replace HAL completely.

They are, but you are limited in what applications you can use, as they 
may have dependencies to udev in the same way as desktop environments 
had dependencies to HAL.

I guess you think it's silly to be able to automount a usb storage that 
you plugin.

You can of course stay back with a vulnerable xorg version, no one will 
stop you, just look around you there are still people using windows xp 
and windows 10.
