I've apparently always had good news servers, because since 1996 I've
never seen as much spam in the newsgroups as some suggest. I suppose
another way of seeing it is that maybe some perceive the spam in
newsgroups as being greater than it is, their tolerance lower. But
google gets it, so yes, people who view usenet through google are often
the ones complaining about spam these days.

But, I thought a real issue with spam was harvesting of email addreses, to
use to send spam via email. Even that doesn't seem as bad as it once was,
though maybe that too gets well filtered.

I can't remember what year, but there was one deluge, I think it was the
fall, where if I didn't clear out my inbox every few hours, it would be
swamped. It was one wave of spam, really an attack, carrying something
fairly large, but I've never seen something so relentless. It was clearly
using email addresses taken from newsgroups, and then after a short
period, it stopped.
