In addition to builtin ispell.el with Hunspell as spellchecker
backend, there's the package “Jinx” (authored by Daniel Mendler)
on GNU Elpa which uses libenchant as backend and has further
performance improvements.

Hmm, I wonder if they meant problems related to <Meta> key on
Xterm but that'd be too far fetched/guessed.

People definitely have performance/freeze issues with Tramp. I
heard that the sshfs method[1] performs better than the ssh
method. (The sshx method might also be worth a try.)

Perhaps this refers to Emacs daemon being used as terminal
multiplexer: Perhaps while you're editing a remote server
configuration file, you suddenly need to leave the computer and go
pick up your child from kindergarden. Both with Emacs daemon as
well as with Tmux with any terminal text editor, you can suspend
and resume your editing session. If you like Emacs' shell REPLs or
terminal emulators -- I love the “eat” package that is written
purely in Elisp and distributed on GNU Elpa --, you can even use
Emacs as multiplexer for shell sessions.

[1] See “4.20.2 ‘sshfs’ setup” chapter in Info node
    (info "(tramp) FUSE setup").
