Perhaps so but that isn't what I'd be asking.  What I would be
asking is for gcc people to be responsible for something gcc is
doing.  Clearly this choice is one that is under gcc's control,
because in some circumstances gcc emits code that behaves
conformingly, even on Ubuntu.  So clearly gcc can do the right
thing, it is simply choosing not to.

Thank you for the info.  There still should be a compiler option
but until then this is something.
