The idea behind them was brilliant: rather than try to create the same icons at different sizes using pixels, just create them as vectors knowing that no matter what size they are turned into, they look the same. It seems so obvious to do it that way now, but it was uncommon for very long. That said, I find Ubuntu's approach to icons to be the best. As far as I can remember, not only does it make use of SVG icons which look good no matter what size they're at, but the desktop itself allows you to place the icons in logical place. Yes, it _does_ make sense to put the Home folder at the bottom right the same way that it makes sense to have the trash be on the dock. If things were perfect, the Home would remain there but any files you add to the desktop would be placed at the top left and line up horizontally rather than vertically. Anyways, it's a personal preference.
