Half of them walked across to the other side of the room and the other half walked through an open doorway into another room with quite different decor, but the same distance. The ones that went though the doorway were on average considerably worse in remembering. The theory put forward was that this goes back to primitive times when if you moved into a different environment you had to very rapidly shut off anything unimportant and assess the situation and identify and survival risks. -- W J G
