The tension between Serbs & Germans was strong in 1914;
the assassination _sparked_ World War I
because Serbia had powerful friends.

Again:

1914, Serbs wanted their own state, independent of Austria & Germany.

At the time, Austria & Germany were very oppressive, 
genocidal ( killing Serbs, Jews & Romani ), similar to 
how China, Singapore & America are today against "wrong thinkers".

Hence World War I and, soon, World War III.
