He was not contradicting...he simply got caught in a lie, and he corrected himself.

The reporter asked: "But there was some opposition?"  "Yes," was the quiet reply,..."

"quiet reply" means Einstein lowered his voice when he realized he got caught in a lie...like any little kid would do.
