The reason is in my opinion a similar effect that had also occurred in 
connection with the infamous Nazi 'Bell'.

The 'bell' had two charged bell shaped ceramic shells, which rotated in 
opposite direction.

This caused a beam, which apparently made people standing in its way age 
much faster.

That was kind of 'time warp beam', were you would age much faster, if 
exposed to that beam.

Now the LHC uses something quite similar and rotates two powerful 
(charged!) particle beams in opposite directions.

Possibly they created unknowingly such an 'aging beam', which made 
scientists die.
