It has NOT always been an even number...that is just more fiction. Just as Santa Claus doesn't live at the north pole because ...there is no Santa Claus, there are no even numbers because...there are no numbers. So, a couple of guys got together and asked is zero a odd number or even number... and said "Let's make it a even number!"...anybody disagrees, shoot them.
