It's not inevitable. Mosaddegh survived the CIA orchestrated coup in Iran.

The Baath Party has turned out to be pretty bad, but it was at least a political party. The people that got pushed out of power were divine right monachists - rather like the current Saudi regime, Arab variations on George the Third.
