Vielleicht weiß jemand anderes mehr zu
dieser Entscheidung des POSIX-Komitees.

Bei ext4 gehen halt alle 8-Bit-Zeichen
im Dateinamen außer '\0' und '/'. 

Leerzeichen sind noch harmlos
(da in ASCII) , ich empfehle die aber nicht.
