[code snipped]

I tried your program on two different Linux systems, one running Debian
lenny with kernel 2.6.26, and the other running Debian squeeze with
kernel 2.6.32, and they both produced the expected output when compiled
with -DIN_FIRST_THREAD, i.e. the approx. final stack size reported was
a little less than the rlim_cur value.

If you are using a more recent kernel it's possible that a bug has
been introduced at some point since 2.6.32.

I also updated the "second thread" code to use pthread_attr_setstack()
to set different stack sizes for the created thread (I tried 4MB and
16MB), and verified that the program reported an approx. final stack
size of just under the new value, even though the rlim_cur value was
still reported as 8MB.
