#94897 — iPhoto - Mothballed or Trashed?

Is there any compelling reason to keep from trashing iPhoto? I
accidentally run it sometimes and it gives me some jabber about Photos,
I exit and run Photos.

But completely discarding an "updated" program, like iMovie as an
example, hasn't always been such a good idea? What about iPhoto?

No problem trashing iPhoto if you don't use it any more (and you've
migrated everything in its library to something else).

I did exactly that last week for someone I was helping prepare for a
Sierra upgrade - it turned out they had started using Photos but then
randomly used iPhoto or Photos to import new photos in the last year or
so, meaning a little export/import cleanup was necessary.

Once that was done, we deleted the iPhoto application and the iPhoto
library (both backed up, of course).

Apart from potentially requiring admin privileges to modify the
Applications folder, iPhoto is not protected from deletion because it is
not part of the operating system, whereas Photos is protected by System
Integrity Protection in El Capitan and later.

Interesting--I didn't realize that.

Yes, damn them! I don't need Photos, don't like it, don't want it. It
annoys me greatly when it launches each time I insert a camera card to
import into Lightroom. I would love to be able to delete "Photos."

So turn off SIP, remove Photos from the Applications folder, then turn on
SIP. Done deal. It's your computer.

it's trivial to disable autolaunch. just click the checkbox at the top
of the window the first time it launches and it won't do it anymore.

I think that you can change the default launcher with "Image Capture".
Just plug a card with CR2s in the reader and open it and there should be
a dropdown or something that let's you pick your poisson...

You can do that in Image Capture, and there is a check box in Photos so
that a USB connected device, Phone, camera, or SD/CF card is not used.
However, with SD/CF cards if they are fresh, or reformated, Photos
treats them as if they are a new, previously unconnected device, and
Photos will open/autolaunch. Then you have to go through the PIA
uncheck procedure all over again.

Photos is without doubt one of the most unwelcome, annoying apps Apple
has ever foisted on users, I am just not sure of the consequences to
the system if it is obliterated from existance, as I would prefer.

Sure, I use both, but they would wish to reach the level of unwelcome
annoyance attained by Photos. Photos is an Apple app I do not use. I
work in a Lightroom/Photoshop CC world. With Affinity Photo on deck.

i use lightroom too, but photos is actually rather good, much better
and faster than iphoto, other than a couple of missing features that
will eventually return.

apple mail is full of problems, including not syncing properly with
mail servers, occasionally losing mail, overall slow, filters that do
not work and a variety of other problems. it continues to have issues
with gmail, which although is non-standard imap, you'd think that
someone would have figured out how to make it work properly by now.
gmail is not new.

netinfo manager, which has been gone for years and i doubt you used it
when it was around, was a total clusterfuck.

And that has *nothing* to do with Photos. It's a macOS feature.

Bullshit. I use Photos regularly and like it. And I know I'm not alone.

So? I am sure you are not alone in using Photos regularly.

I think it's a *good* feature that I can tell the OS what to do when I
mount an SD card, and that I only have to do that *once* for each card I
use. I suppose it might be nice to be able to tell it to do it for *any*
card; but since I don't use many cards, that's not a big deal to me.
When I insert a new card, I can easily tell it what to do then.

So it's not "without doubt one of the most unwelcome, annoying apps
Apple has ever foisted on users".

That's not what you said, but you're certainly free to state your
opinion.

Also, like I said, you are perfectly free to delete the Photos app from
your system since it's *your* computer.

However, some folks actually reformat SD & CF cards in a camera, then
you have to jump through the annoying hoops again as your indispensible
feature sees the SD/CF card, with a fresh DCIM folder as a new camera.
