Replace "I get in" with "the installer runs", yes; but that is irrelevant to using SD or CCC to clone the startup volume. > If I clone an existing system disk minus my own directories, would it be > correct to state that I would boot with requirement for user/pass and > that the entered user would need to have a valid ~ directory that exists ? Yep. That's why I tend to prefer creating an installer USB stick instead. I suppose if you really insist on cloning instead, you could boot on the USB stick afterwards, delete all but one administration account, and set that account to automatically log in at startup. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Every time I've created a bootable flash drive (and i've done it for every system upgrade), I've needed to do a clean install from the Apple installer. It's a real pain in the ass because it takes a lot of time to actually boot into the flash drive, and install the recovery apps... but, once it's done, it's done - and it's functional. -- All those who believe in telekinesis raise my hand.

Are you saying you tried to clone your startup volume with SuperDuper or CCC and it didn't work? If I want an installer USB stick, I just use Disk Utility to restore the InstallESD.dmg disk image (contained in the installer package Contents/SharedSupport directory) to the USB stick. It's simple and fast, and you end up with a bootable installer. > It's a real pain in the ass because it takes a lot of time to actually > boot into the flash drive, and install the recovery apps... but, once > it's done, it's done - and it's functional. IIRC, the 10.6 installer package has no such disk image, so instead you use Disk Utility to restore the entire install DVD to the USB stick. -- Sent from my iPhone

I have to assume that it is pulled from the net as you do the installation. (and I want that file before I do installation, obviously). This is from my laptop's old drive, (Yosemite installed). Would this file be contained elsewhere on the system drive ? Or does whatever app on Yosemite which create the partition have a hardcoded list of files to copy from itself to the recovery partition ? While for this exercise I can use the DVD, I want to learn how to do it because if the hard disk fails, both the data and the recovery partition are gone, so I do want a recovery boot on separate media.

Not that I know of. You'll need to re-download the installer from the App Store. I archive zipped copies of my installers in case I need them later. > While for this exercise I can use the DVD, I want to learn how to do it > because if the hard disk fails, both the data and the recovery partition > are gone, so I do want a recovery boot on separate media. I think for 10.6 you're stuck with using the DVD, or a disk image of the DVD (which is what I typically use). -- Sent from my iPhone

The Yosemite installer, the ".app" is a very small file. Only once you start to install it does it actually download what I assume is the .dmg and gets zapped afterwards. I managed to keep the .app but not the temp files downloaded during the insall (since you have no access to the system during the install). > I think for 10.6 you're stuck with using the DVD, or a disk image of the > DVD (which is what I typically use). Looks like it is the only/best solution. Was curious why there was no way to build a "recovery" disk on Snow Leopard since there wasn't a recovery partition. With Yosemite and later, is there a way to create only a recovery partition ? (for instance on a data disk so you could boot from that one should the system disk totally fail ?)

Probably, but I've never been interested in that since the installer on a USB stick works fine for my needs. -- Sent from my iPhone

At that point J.F. can open App Store.app and download a fresh, new, complete copy of the Yosemite installer. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Be kind to animals; kiss a shark. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlYIwc0ACgkQUrwpmRoS3usbYACfYfdON5zS+wbw7bXGooes1zEW vUQAniT6nq6vMs/UhFwsGHmLNTWyIfG5 =1R60 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

When running any of the OS X installers, 10.7+, a recovery partitian is automatically created on the drive upon which the system is installed. One can create a 6Gb partitian on any external drive and create a recovery volume, just as one would on a 8Gb USB flash drive. Both are external and neither requires the hypothetically failed drive, in order to boot and reinstall on a replacement drive. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Be kind to animals; kiss a shark. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlYIviAACgkQUrwpmRoS3uvo2gCdHJk4T0oTRf2tA+aybu0Bdo2T 0ZsAniMqN2cuVxe/NaqWKqd9YI+xDBwH =ac7d -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

You're a serious glutton for punishment. Burning this to a DVD is possible, but it's an enormous waste of time. As it is such a waste of time, no one other than you has suggested using one. Use a 8Gb USB flash drive. [*] As I pointed out, running the installer from the Applications folder will cause the installer to delete itself, following completion. Unless you move it or copied it, prior to running the Yosemite installer, it's not going to exist on your drive. Open App Store.app; select Purchased; locate Yosemite; click DOWNLOAD. (If the DOWNLOAD option is available, it means that the application isn't in /Applications already.) Once you have the installer, you'll also have the .dmg you seek. You'll find the installer in /Applications. -- David Ritz <dritz@mindspring.com> Be kind to animals; kiss a shark. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iEYEARECAAYFAlYIfAMACgkQUrwpmRoS3uvaPwCePuNV/nkdVmTxztylYO47ydIx XnsAni7P9ZI1TMozj66/wnMfzqq9lo0i =Fds1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Interesting that it contains the .app that contains it :-) Out of curiosity, is a USB stick really faster than a DVD ? I would think DVD interface to the system is faster than USB ? (I realise seek times are slower, but for booting, isn't more "sequential" loading of a lot of data instead of a lot of random seeks all over the place ? > [*] As I pointed out, running the installer from the Applications > folder will cause the installer to delete itself, following > completion. Don't remember what I did, but it remained there. I think it deletes itself when invoked by the App Store, but not when launched from the finder. (my theory).

Yes.

Your assumptions are too frequently incorrect, as is the case here.
1) Plug an 8Gb USB flash drive into the computer where the installer
resides.
2) Launch /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app.
3) Format the flash drive HFS+, with the name Untitled.
4) Enter the following at the command prompt in Terminal.app and
enter your sudoer password when requested.
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction
> Out of curiosity, is a USB stick really faster than a DVD ?
Yes, the flash drive is several times faster and optical media, in
this application.
>> [*] As I pointed out, running the installer from the Applications

You probably downloaded the installer a second time, from the App
Store, for whatever reason. As long as we're dealing with conjecture,
I suspect you freaked, when you couldn't find the installer and panic
set in.
> I think it deletes itself when invoked by the App Store, but not
> when launched from the finder. (my theory).
When the download from the App Store completes, the installer launches
automatically. This is the point where one should quit the installer,
copy it to a 'safe' place, ie. ~/Downloads, and create your backup
installers on an outboard drive. That outboard drive needs to have at
least a 6Gb partition, whether it's on a HDD, SSD or, preferably, a
USB stick. Once you have your belt AND suspenders in place, you may
safely run the installer. If it's run from /Applications, the
directory to which the App Store downloads the installer, the
installer will be deleted following installation. Running the
installer from some other location, ie. ~/Downloads, will leave the
installer where it is, following installation.
When you get around to upgrading to El Capitan you can reformat the
USB stick and use the command line, substituting El\ Capitan for
Yosemite, in the 'sudo ...' string, above. Just remember to put the
intstaller somewhere safe, ie. any directory other than /Applications
and do your housework before running the installer.

(I removed the --nointeraction to get prompts just in case). My gut tells me that this app, while it can start on Snow Leopard, probably expects to run under Yosemite. (aka: once installation has gone far enough to populate a Yosemite drive and reboot, at which point the installation continues while under Yosemite). I copied the Base System dmg to USB. Will try it on laptop tomorrow. (rebooting my workstation takes too much time to re-open all the work currently opened on it). If this is bootable and has a diskutil on it, then I am all set to have a minimal system to allow me to prepare my Mac for upgrade to Yosemite with proper backups on new drives etc.
