Not before the first run, it isn't. That's why you have to do this from a
pristine copy freshly downloaded without running it.

You need to archive it before you run it.

OS X 10.6 had no such thing - recovery partitions came in later versions of
OS X.

Probably, but I've never been interested in that since the installer on a
USB stick works fine for my needs.
