I don't disagree that mankind may contribute in a minor way. Climate always changes. Have you ever heard of the "Maunder Minimum"? I offer a Wikipedia link. You might learn something, but I doubt that any of you "I buy into it" fans will. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunder_Minimum>. There's even more interesting Maunder knowledge available if you care to look. How the hell did that happen? It was real cold before I was born. Now it's getting hot. In geological terms, the time difference is negligible. I also offer, in support of my position and to all of my detractors: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H-Y7MAASkg&ab_channel=bagel84568>. You Seeking justification via the minor case does not make that the signpost that all is well, so carry on. The amount of change to the planet caused by us over the past 200 years is staggering. And now formerly have-not, highly populated countries like China and India want to catch up... Scientists from all over the world concur and have documented why humans are the main contributors to climate change which includes severe warming in the polar regions. Finding nuggets of "reason" to exclude the truth is simply dangerous. As someone else noted, the deniers are led by those with skin in the polluting-for-sake-of-profit game.

They are very likely wrong given the consensus >among climate scientists and many others, but best not to over egg the >pudding, it brings the cockroaches out. Concensus != proof That is the mistake you make. I'm skeptical (that we know whether its happening and if humans are causing it) for science based reasons, based on: * the complexity of the problem * that the methods used are too hand-wavy * that none of the predictions has yet been tested, so the jury is out by definition. If you're into conspiracy theories (I'm not, in general) you can argue that there are those with a vested interest (either in oil or because they bet the farm on wind, solar, ...), those whose jobs, research grants, status, depend on believing in it, or that the jumping on the band-wagon of the pope, Banki Moon and other expert politicos, lefties, righties, and luvvies [1], proves one thing or another. Personally I save energy where I can because I'm a cheapskate. All the wood for my woodburner comes from across the field, but I'll use oil for most heating purposes because it's cheapest. If I stop using oil, I ruin my lifestyle and reduce CO2 by 0.0000000000001%, so those who might castigate me for using oil would have to explain what motivation I might have to stop using it. [1] luvvies is Private Eye's [2] useful rude word to describe actors and other similarly pretentious people who like to virtue-signal to each other on Twitter about things such as this, and who have the gift of the gab, but otherwise know fuck all about anything of importance. Hardly! I would be a *complete* idiot to do that and I am not *that* bad*! No, the idea is more complex: it is about the qualifications and reliability of those saying something as against a minority who tend not to be as qualified or insider involved with the data. It is taught in elementary school "clear thinking" (or even early year uni philosophy courses) that arguments by authority are a poor thing. But it is just not so in any unqualified way. You must know this from your general experience of life, we very often and quite rationally come to rely on expert views in fields in which we are very unexpert. In fields like theology, expertness comes down to a certain erudition but it is all based on very suspicious grounds or terms or assumptions. No one can really be expert in this "field" except in terms of knowing the history of ideas and what has been written or thought. There is no doubt that some people have thought deeply about theological matters and some are even to be respected. But there is little to go on in their personal histories when it comes down to predictions or fitting empirical data. They have never particularly shined in this. It is a very different matter when you look at the careers of the people that have contributed and built the views of the latest climate change warming scenarios. > I'm skeptical (that we know whether its > happening and if humans are causing it) for science based reasons, > based on: > > * the complexity of the problem > > * that the methods used are too hand-wavy > > * that none of the predictions has yet been tested, so the jury is out > by definition. > Well, what can I say, argue your grounds with a climate scientist. Just like we could have world peace if "everyone" > stopped fighting. Simple, eh? But these simple approaches overlook the > tremendous upside for those who cheat, and the tremendous downside for > those who don't. As I say, where's my motivation? The line of thinking is very much older than Dawkins! *You* see it as game theory, you may even see all of ethical thinking as game theory and you might do whatever you get away with, at least in the short term (though I doubt this, I think you just have not thought the whole thing through). There are a number of ways for people to behave ethically or at least to do so from ethical motivations. One is the fear of fairly direct punishment. The other way is achieved by internalising the community (and/or the earth) and having it's welfare at heart. Then it is not a matter of getting away with things because part of your concern is something much bigger than yourself. -- dorayme

Just another thing about this sort of summary, I am reminded about how the tobacco industry played against the increasing evidence for decades, also about how some of the food industries like sugar still do it. Make sure that complexity and uncertainty and doubt is emphasised a lot. The latter, not admitting it of course, seemed to be operating with something like a mathematical idea of proof. The idea of proof, of course, was not in their real interest to analyse. It is an easy word to use. It is easy to sow doubt. And widely, especially when you have a lot of money. Not saying that Tim has not got good arguments to back himself up. Just that they need to be given, and they need to be peer reviewed. -- dorayme

Climatology a new phrenology? If you actually look at which scientists says what about climate change, you will find a big range of relevant specialities, none of which could possibly be regarded as unscientific. Climatology is not so much a single discipline as it is big numbers of competent scientists in various relevant fields talking to each other and cooperating and agreeing on at least some things. These some things in the past few years include global warming caused in significant part by human activity. It is nowhere near phrenology. -- dorayme

It is nowhere near phrenology. Climatology is the exact equivalent to phrenology, and you missed this spirited debate by not calling me to guide you to Bodie ;-) You are using "relevant" and "competent" way too much in your post. Misinterpreting physical data for personal gain by pseudo-scientists using political grants is not science at all. Forgive me. I'm a antediluvian monster winking at you with one nictitating eye. leo

That's how you see the work of international meetings and cooperations that resulted in the assessment about human induced climate change. Nothing I can do about that! And, well, even if I could, maybe I wouldn't, maybe it's nice to have some variety of opinions as well as conspiracy theorists. It's more worrisome that some of you pack weapons! -- dorayme
