Hardly! I would be a *complete* idiot to do that and I am not *that* 
bad*! No, the idea is more complex: it is about the qualifications and 
reliability of those saying something as against a minority who tend 
not to be as qualified or insider involved with the data. 

It is taught in elementary school "clear thinking" (or even early year 
uni philosophy courses) that arguments by authority are a poor thing. 
But it is just not so in any unqualified way. You must know this from 
your general experience of life, we very often and quite rationally 
come to rely on expert views in fields in which we are very unexpert.

In fields like theology, expertness comes down to a certain erudition 
but it is all based on very suspicious grounds or terms or 
assumptions. No one can really be expert in this "field" except in 
terms of knowing the history of ideas and what has been written or 
thought. There is no doubt that some people have thought deeply about 
theological matters and some are even to be respected. But there is 
little to go on in their personal histories when it comes down to 
predictions or fitting empirical data. They have never particularly 
shined in this. 

It is a very different matter when you look at the careers of the 
people that have contributed and built the views of the latest climate 
change warming scenarios.

Well, what can I say, argue your grounds with a climate scientist. If 
you do it here, all you will have at most is a bit of fun.

Are you serious? You are not aware of the simple idea that there is no 
problem one or two people burning dirty coal in their fireplaces but 
if everyone does it...?
