I used to use ARD quite alot, but I have found that Screen Sharing
works well most of the time. and Screen Sharing has the advantage of
always being there.

I'd add Crashplan, if you have a computer with space and a decent
connection. Setup Crashplan on their machines to backup to your machine
just the important things (~/Pictures ~/Documents ~/Desktop, for
example). This when, when they completely screw up, you have their most
important things available to recover.

Best part, for machine to machine backups, it's entirely free.
