Confused about Mail mailboxes (local and remote)

Now that I have Mail running under El Capitan on my iMac, I notice
that the mailboxes are not the same as I have on my MacBook, which
is running Sierra. I'm wondering whether the differences are because
the iMac has Mail 9 and the MacBook has Mail 10, or whether I have
something set up differently.

Here's what the mailboxes look like on my MB:

Very clean--all the folders I normally use are at the top, while the
remote mailboxes on Sonic's mailserver that I don't use are grouped
at the bottom of the sidebar.

But on my iMac, I'm getting this:

Although not named as such, Inbox and its subfolders are all of
the folders on the Sonic server. There are also two each Sent and
Trash folders (besides the ones in the Inbox). Even worse, when
I send a message from my iMac, it is NOT showing up in Sent/On My
Mac. I can't find sent messages anywhere. 

I discovered that the Mailbox Behaviors window is very different
in the two versions of Mail:

Is there a way in Mail 9 to emulate the clean mailbox structure of
Mail 10, or do I have to upgrade to Sierra to change things? Are
we sure that the structure will change if I upgrade? I have no
aversion to upgrading; I was just planning to get all settled in
on El Cap for a few days before moving on to Sierra.
