They're not all that far apart. The single biggest difference, you ask?

Sorry we're stuck with OpenVMS. Unfortuneately I can not print my
opinion of this new name in a public forum. However here's the "party
line" I have to use everytime someone asks me why:
"Digital, changed name of VMS to OpenVMS to reflect the high level of open
standards support in our software and to highlight our commitment to
continue and expand this support in the future. With the addition of POSIX
and XPG3 components to OpenVMS, and our support for NAS, we intend to
supply a completely open computing evironment that provides our customers
with application and user portability and system interoperability."
And now that we have 2 platforms for OpenVMS to run on we have 2
product names:
OpenVMS VAX
OpenVMS Alpha AXP
Yes that's right. Alpha couldn't be trademarked so they trademarked
"Alpha AXP". What does AXP stand for you ask? The same thing "GL"
stands for on my Volkswagon "Jetta GL" and the same thing "LX" stands
for on my wife's Honda "Accord LX". It's a differentiator with no
direct interpretation like "Virtual Address eXtended".
