They're not all that far apart. The single biggest difference, you ask?

Sorry we're stuck with OpenVMS. Unfortuneately I can not print my
opinion of this new name in a public forum. However here's the "party
line" I have to use everytime someone asks me why:

"Digital, changed name of VMS to OpenVMS to reflect the high level of open
standards support in our software and to highlight our commitment to
continue and expand this support in the future. With the addition of POSIX
and XPG3 components to OpenVMS, and our support for NAS, we intend to
supply a completely open computing evironment that provides our customers
with application and user portability and system interoperability."

And now that we have 2 platforms for OpenVMS to run on we have 2
    product names:

    	OpenVMS VAX

    	OpenVMS Alpha AXP

Yes that's right. Alpha couldn't be trademarked so they trademarked
"Alpha AXP". What does AXP stand for you ask? The same thing "GL"
stands for on my Volkswagon "Jetta GL" and the same thing "LX" stands
for on my wife's Honda "Accord LX". It's a differentiator with no
direct interpretation like "Virtual Address eXtended".

I'm running Snow Leopard, maybe they renamed it in newer versions.

I was able to update to Xquartz from X11 while at Snow Leopard. Note
that the upgrade didn't go well on my Xserve, but went well on the desktop.

This moves you from the now unsupported Apple produce "X11" to the
communityt supported XQuartz project. The current version also moves
stuff out of what will become SIP protected directories should you
upgtade to El-Capitan.

What does that have to do with Terminal preferences?

I find it's much easier to use Apple's /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
application and just ssh into whatever machine you want to use. Terminal
has lots of flexibility and functionality built into it I find very
useful.

Default behaviour emulating VT-100 being one of them. (The VT-100
having the most horrid escape sequences for control that I've ever seen,
mind you).

Its control sequences formed the basis for the ANSI X3.64 standard (or
maybe it was the other way around), and most terminals and emulators
since then have been using them.

Never said different. The format remains ugly and rather unintuitive to
program. (The VT-100 - per your link - was the first to implement the
standard as published).

ANSI format was derived from the VT220 (a superset of VT100). Digital
developped the escape sequences well before the standard was established.

Note that ANSI added a few bells and whistles to the DEC standards as
well. (I think some colour sequences which DEC may have used on its
VT240 colour terminal).

Go read the article that Barry linked to. In short: The ECMA standard
contained the VT-52 controlset and then "standardized" various other
things calling it ECMA-48 (1976) - in turn DEC implemented that in the
VT-100 (1978). ECMA-48 became the ANSI standard after that. But
ECMA-48 predated the VT-100.

While the VT100 had a VT52 compatibility mode, the escape sequences for
both are not compatible except for the "inquire terminal" which when
sent to the terminal, causes the terminal to respond with its
identificatioN/capabilities.

I'd have to fire up one of my 2 remaining VT220s to see it the setup
menus even included ability to do VT52.

Mine says "xterm-color" and I never changed it, so ... isn't that the
default?

I use xterm windows all the time to access remote machines via ssh.

Maybe you can do that with X resources. If you figure it out, let us
know.

In tcsh:

   alias xtitle 'echo "]0;"\!*""\\c'

Then 'xtitle foo' will make the xterm's title read "foo". That's a
control-g after the 3rd double quote and a control-[ after the first
double quote.

In XQuartz preferences, under Input, I have checked (only) "Emulate
three button mouse". Under Pasteboard, I have everything checked.
Then option-click is the middle button (for pasting) and command-click
is the right button (for specifying the end region for copying). And
if you highlight text in an xterm, you can then paste it with the
usual Command-V in other Mac apps (or with option-click in xterm).

I like courier. This is a nice size for my eyes.

  -adobe-courier-bold-r-normal--14-140-75-75-m-90-iso8859-1

I also use Focus Follows Mouse under Windows in XQuartz preferences.

I'm not sure how good is the VT emulation of Terminal which can handle
SSH with no problem and has a border by default.

In the preferences, you can select emulation of vt52, vt100, vt102, and
several xterm types.

It has several options for the title bar, but I don't think it has
exactly the one you want.

Its clipboard is the system-wide clipboard (but X11 has ways to get to
that).
