The idea is ease of use. But, sure, you can use ffmpeg directly, too.

Right. Visually I saw no difference between the video we produced and the
original was smaller than either of ours.

Again, NOT saying your solution was bad... just giving another option. Miro
is definitely quirky (the double file extension if nothing else).
