As you go down > the list to the less popular distributions, the quality plummets. Part of the problem with Linux is that it does NOT offer much real choice. Sure, you can have a bunch of DEs and different ways to install software. So? You end up running the same rather limited selection of apps (in the desktop space). And even then, when you have so many DEs the apps are not designed to take advantage of them all so you end up with software written for the lowest common denominator. This LIMITS workflow choices. And the "advocates" know this. It is the primary reason they freak out when I show them something BASIC on the competition like the different ways of editing a PDF and saving it as well as emailing it. Trivial on the competition and with lots of choice as to how to do it. A VERY basic task. But on Linux there is not much choice. The task is hardly difficult, but it is not streamlined, either. This is true of many EASY tasks... but whenever I show an example the "advocates" focus on that ONE example and fail to see the big picture. They tend to think in terms of machines being used for a single task... it is as if the idea of a machine being used for lots of things is just beyond their thinking. But that is what a general desktop SHOULD do... work for many tasks and do most well. >> That being said, Ubuntu/Mint is a nice distro, but unfortunately limited >> in the available software.
